It won’t be long until we’re back in the classrooms and hallways of Abbot Elementary! The second season of the Emmy-winning comedy will premiere on September 21, and in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the cast—including writer, executive producer, and leading woman Quinta Brunson—discussed what viewers may anticipate from the show in the new academic year. Last year, we met the dedicated faculty at Abbott Elementary, a public school in Philadelphia that has been struggling financially, thanks to the hard work of a group of teachers who have gone above and beyond. The Mockumentary technique is used to depict the inner workings of a public school that has been neglected by the government. Brunson, as the perpetually upbeat Janine Teagues, lightens the mood by including the views of both inexperienced and seasoned educators.
It’s true that every educator is unique in their approach to the classroom and the students they’re tasked with guiding, but they all share a dedication to making a difference in their student’s lives via their work. In the first season, we got to know the school and its staff members quite well. Brunson has hinted that we will get to know these characters more in their spare time during Season 2. In a very Janine move, the show’s producer told Entertainment Weekly that “more enjoyment is the aim.”
She didn’t want to spoil too much, but she did clarify that Season 2 of Abbot Elementary will have more scenes outside of the school and give viewers a glimpse into “a bit more of the outer life of the instructors.” Brunson detailed her strategy for each season, saying: “We plan to spend more time at home and in their company. The first season’s goal was to make viewers care about Abbott and its students and teachers. As a result, we aimed to get individuals interested in working with or visiting Abbott. By this point in the season, they are fully aware of who we are. Educators are well-known to them. They have a solid familiarity with the institution. Thanks to this, we can finally leave the house more often, visit parties and events, and even visit the homes of our characters. But I still think a comedy about the workplace should be set there. As a result, we won’t be completely transformed into a different programme.”
Abbott Elementary is a funny programme, but it also addresses some serious problems in public education and the numerous difficulties that teachers face without much recognition. It shows the difficulty and pain endured by people who take on the task of teaching and, in effect, raising children. Abbott Primary also focuses on the positive aspects of elementary school and gives us a glimpse behind the curtains of the teachers’ lounge. Given that the events of Season 2 will take place in the autumn, we may also expect to see episodes that focus on the winter holidays. Brunson responded to the question by saying, “I can’t say much more than that I’m looking forward to this show because of the costumes. Expect a lot of laughs from this. Each year, we celebrate a few unique holidays. We have our own versions of Black History Month, Thanksgiving, and Valentine’s Day.” Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Tyler James Williams, Chris Perfetti, and William Stanford Davis, just to name a few of the amazing cast members, make Abbott Elementary come to life. On September 21, ABC welcomes back it’s back-to-school programming. Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV, and HBO Max all have episodes from the first season of Abbott Elementary.
