Third episode of “House of the Dragon,” and HBO will fix the faulty CGI

After only three episodes, House of the Dragon has already had several blunders in its computer-generated imagery. Fans noticed a problem with King Viserys’ hands and the internet was quick to call it out in the most recent episode “Second of His Name,” but a new report from Variety claims that HBO plans to correct the issue on its streaming platforms. In Episode 3, the King (Paddy Considine) sends a letter to his brother Daemon (Matt Smith) on the Stepstone, which is delivered by a soldier. On the other hand, his third and fourth fingers are still unpainted and remain green. A visual effects editor accidentally left the “green screen” effect on Considine’s fingers in the final cut, making the mistake all the more understandable.

To sit on the Iron Throne is not a simple task; this is something that has been established both in the novels and the show. Viserys’ gash on the back demonstrated in the pilot that kings are prone to self-injury. In the second episode, the monarch cuts off his pinky finger and the masters utilise maggots to preserve his flesh. To keep the story consistent, the “green fingers” should always seem like they’ve been stubbed or have been modified to show maggot bites. However, this sort of CG error has happened before in the Game of Thrones series. After the Battle of Winterfell, in the infamous Season 8 Episode 4 “The Last of the Starks,” a coffee cup, which looked suspiciously like a Starbucks cup, was put directly in front of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

Although it was only visible for a split second, the out-of-place cup quickly became the subject of memes and online discussion. The studio received a lot of criticism from the audience and quickly fixed the problem, which it says won’t repeat. As a standard practice, streaming platforms often go back and fix mistakes in previously published episodes. After the release of Stranger Things Season 4, the Duffer brothers announced that Netflix had given them permission to alter some visual effects, and that they planned to rectify the birthdate mistake that had been made for Will.

Marvel Studios also revised the visual effects in Spider-Man: No Way Home after the film’s first release. HBO will inevitably follow suit. The fourth episode of House of the Dragon, titled “King of the Narrow Sea,” will premiere on September 11.
