New footage from Onyx Collective’s upcoming courtroom drama Reasonable Doubt, which premieres on Hulu on September 27th, has been published. This new 1-minute and 48-second video introduces us to Emayatzy Corinealdi (Ballers) as Los Angeles criminal defence attorney Jacqueline “Jax” Stewart, who is billed as “fearless” and has “questionable ethics and wacky interpretations of the law.” The trailer follows her as she deals with a murder investigation while simultaneously juggling a broken marriage and the difficulties of parenting.
The trailer ends with Stewart declaring, “No matter what I say, at the end of the day I adore criminals,” while the tagline “The Truth Belongs to Those Who Twist It” plays in the background. Reasonable Doubt, the first scripted series from Onyx Collective, is loosely inspired by celebrity attorney Shawn Holley, who has represented the likes of the Kardashian and Jenner families, Lindsay Lohan, Justin Bieber, Tupac Shakur, and Katt Williams, among others. All of the episodes are directed by Black filmmakers, and the whole writing staff is Black.
The series is named after Jay-debut Z’s album, Reasonable Doubt, which also serves as the inspiration for the titles of individual episodes. Artists including Outkast, Nipsey Hussle, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu, as well as traditional artists in these genres, are included in the show. Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad are responsible for the score of the series (Luke Cage). Showrunner, writer, and executive producer Raamala Mohammad (Little Fires Everywhere, Scandal) is also the show’s creator. Mohammad is an executive producer on the show alongside Pilar Savone of Simpson Street and Larry Wilmore of Wilmore Films. The series is directed by Kerry Washington.
Shawn Holley, who was the show’s inspiration, now works as a co-executive producer alongside Jon Leshay. ABC Signature, a division of Disney Television Studios, is responsible for producing the show. Corinealdi is joined by a stellar ensemble that includes Michael Ealy, Sean Patrick Thomas, McKinley Freeman, TJ Mixson, Aderinsola Olabode, Tim Jo, and Angela Grovey. The debut of Reasonable Doubt on Hulu will take place on September 27.
