As the summer winds down, we anticipate the coming of fall’s cooler weather. One bright spot in the midst of the gloom of shorter, chillier days is the deluge of fresh television shows on the horizon. There is a lot of scary stuff coming out, from Tim Burton’s take on the murderous daughter from The Addams Family on Wednesday on Netflix to the final showdown between Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and The Shape (James Jude Courtney) in Halloween Ends, directed by David Gordon Green. Everyone, however, is counting down the days until October for The Winchesters, a new sitcom on The CW. Fans were just given a new poster for the Supernatural prequel, further fueling their anticipation and enthusiasm for one of (if not) the most highly anticipated storylines we’re thrilled to see play out on our televisions.
Sharing a famous line from the original series, the show’s Twitter caption said, “The #SPN Family is back in business,” alluding to the show’s focus on the “family business” that fans of the original production were so familiar with. Our heroes, young John and Mary Winchester (or Mary Campbell, as she was called in those days) are shown on the poster.
The demon hunters, played by Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly, stand in the middle of the poster, only to be swallowed by the black, long-nailed hands of an unknown monster. Up above, it says “A Supernatural Love Story,” and down below, you can find out when you can watch the budding romance between the demon-hunting team. After much deliberation, Eric Kripke (The Boys), creator of the original Supernatural, finally gave his okay to Supernatural alumni Jensen Ackles and his wife Daneel Ackles to film their prequel.
The clip reveals that the series will take place in 1972, before the birth of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Ackles), and will follow John and Mary from their first meeting through their first demon slaughter as a team. Bianca Kajlich, Nida Khurshid, Jojo Fleites, Bridget Regan, and Demetria McKinney are all expected to appear in the film as part of the ensemble cast. Ackles will return as Dean, although for the time being, he will only serve as the show’s narrator. Misha Collins and Ruth Connell have been speculated to return in some capacity to reprise their roles as Castiel and Rowena, respectively, but Jensen’s co-star Jared Padalecki has been tight-lipped about whether or not his character would appear in the prequel series. The CW will premiere The Winchesters on October 11.
