The first trailer for Netflix’s The Good Nurse has been released before the film’s world debut at the Venice Film Festival. The film, starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne, is based on a true murder that sent shockwaves through the American medical community.
In the latest promotional material, Chastain plays Amy Loughren, a stressed-out nurse and mother of two, while Redmayne plays Charlie Cullen, her “partner” and pal on the night shift.
Amy’s internal battle to make sense of their connection and the unexpected deaths that keep occurring at the hospital rises gradually. The movie is based on Charles Graeber’s 2013 book of the same name, which details the horrific acts committed by serial murderer Charlie Cullen, who was responsible for the deaths of about 300 patients by administering fatal doses of medications to them. He worked as a doctor for 16 years before committing murder, claiming that the “dehumanisation” of patients in hospitals was responsible. He justified the actions by saying that he was relieving his victims’ suffering and that he was doing them a “service.”
Amy risks endangering herself and her girls in order to get the truth and expose Cullen. When news of the case broke, it sent shockwaves across the medical community and the general population. The clip suggests that both Chastain and Redmayne do a great job at giving their characters depth. While Redmayne seems very composed as he embraces his inner darkness, Chastain practises empathy and sharpens her detective abilities. The teaser keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you question who is actually looking out for your health when you’re quarantined within a hospital.
Danish filmmaker Tobias Lindholm helms, and Oscar winner Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Last Night in Soho, 1917) wrote the script. Actors Nnamdi Asomugha, Noah Emmerich, and Kim Dickens join Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne in the film. The Good Nurse, which premiered on September 11 at the Venice Film Festival, will hit cinemas on October 19. The film will premiere on Netflix on October 26.
