At a lavish ceremony in Chennai on Tuesday, the first teaser for director Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: I, a Tamil language historical epic, was presented. The event was attended by superstars of Tamil cinema including Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, as well as the film’s massive ensemble. Like Dune, the Ponniyin Selvan adaptation of Kalki’s 1955 novel will be split into two parts. The teaser runs for three and a half minutes and is packed with spectacular images, including glimpses of an epic battle, vibrant musical moments, and palace intrigue. The film follows the lives of Jayam Ravi (playing Arulmozhi Varman) and Vikram (playing Aditya Karikalan) as they grow up during the Chola dynasty, a period of Indian history that spans back to the first century A.D. They were the future Rajaraja I and Aditya II. Warrior Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan is played by Karthi, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has a double part.
It’s as if Game of Thrones and Zhang Yimou had a baby, and the baby was a South Indian epic with an over-the-top style. Those who like the recent RRR will adore the show of maximalism. Rai Bachchan is likely to be the most well-known actor in the film among Western viewers. She has appeared in Gurinder Chadha’s Bride & Prejudice and The Pink Panther 2 in addition to being a regular at the Cannes Film Festival. A.R. Rahman, who won two Academy Awards for his score for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, is a household name in India and will likely be recognised by international viewers.
Just like the rest of the cast and crew. The novel has been attempted to be adapted several times since the 1950s, but none have been as successful as Ratnam’s. Even though the director is most known for his social and political dramas, he has previously taken on literary epics with Thalapathi and Raavanan, and Ponniyin Selvan is a passion project he has tried to get off the ground several times since the 1990s. Some background: Ponniyin Selvan is a film from India, however, it is not a Bollywood film. It was produced in Tamil Nadu, a state in southern India known for its film production.
The Hindi film industry, or Bollywood, is located in the Indian city of Mumbai. Even though most Western audiences saw the dubbed Hindi version of RRR on Netflix, fans of the film know that it was initially made in Telugu. India is home to a number of distinct cinema industries that operate largely autonomously from one another, while certain films, such as Ponniyin Selvan, have national appeal and may be shown in many territories. With the unprecedented success of not just RRR but also director S.S. Rajamouli’s two earlier successes, Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, interest in South Indian epics is likely at an all-time high. Films in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, and Telugu starring Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, Sarath Kumar, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Jayachitra, Rahman, Vikram Prabhu, Ashwin Kakumanu, Lal, Parthiban, and Riyaz Khan are set to premiere on September 30. Not only is this the first Tamil film to be shown in IMAX, but it’s also the first film ever made in Tamil.
