The cast of Grey’s Anatomy has released a first-look video for the forthcoming 19th season, in which a new group of first-year surgical residents will make an appearance. As the video begins, Meredith Grey is giving a tour to a group of new residents. Here you are. With this gear, you can both save and take lives. Given the stakes, the video shows us that the interns are “diamonds in the rough” who were rejected elsewhere but given an opportunity to shine at Grey Sloan. The new cast members share some background on their characters and the trials they will experience in the video’s second half. Alexis Floyd, who plays Simone Griffith, says that she brings “a really grounded but emotional connection to her work” in the preview.
Adelaide Kane’s character Jules Millin is up next; she’s rumoured to have had a romantic history with Dr Atticus Lincoln. Jules is “a little bit pushy, a little impetuous,” according to Kane, who also notes that she is “extremely kind-hearted.” Lucas Adams is the proverbial “black sheep of his family,” as Niko Terho puts it while introducing his character. He’s making an effort to demonstrate his entitlement to be there. Harry Shum Jr., who portrays “Blue” Benson Kwan, is the group’s perfectionist, who strives to be the best. Mika Yasuda, portrayed by Midori Francis, is the group’s comic relief.
Defining Mika, Midori says, “[Mika] is a jokester and likes to make others laugh;” adding, “Sometimes, her sense of humour puts her in trouble.” The video suggests that Meredith and Nick (Scott Speedman) have reconciled following their fight in Season 18. It also suggests that Bailey, Owen, Teddy, and, of course, Meredith Grey will be returning to the show. Floyd explained that many of the returning characters, including the interns, would be given a second chance this season.
Francis says, “fans can expect all the things they love about the programme, but with an explosion of newness” in the upcoming 19th season. The long-running ABC medical drama follows surgical residents, interns, and attending physicians as they juggle professional and personal responsibilities and deal with the complexities of their personal relationships. The name of the show is a pun on “Gray’s Anatomy,” a landmark medical and anatomy textbook first published in London in 1858 and written by Henry Gray.
Grey’s Anatomy will return to ABC for its nineteenth season on October 6 at 9 p.m. ET.
