The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on Prime Video is a thrilling return to Middle-earth. The series is based on the works of J. R. R. Tolkien and has only just premiered on the streaming service, but it already appears to be a smash hit. On its first day, the season debut of “The Crown” attracted over 25 million people around the world, breaking all prior records for a premiere on Amazon Prime Video.
It should come as no surprise that more than twenty years after Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy was released, the stories of Middle-earth still retain immense attraction, as Tolkien’s novels, upon which the series is based, are regarded as fantasy legends. The head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke, has commented on the accomplishment, praising the creative team, the Tolkien estate, and the millions of fans around the world who have made it a good start to another epic adventure following the series’ launch in 240 countries and territories around the globe.
These are the comments: Tolkien’s novels, which are among the most read of all time and are sometimes credited as the inspiration for the fantasy genre, have brought us to this moment of triumph. I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the Tolkien Estate, as well as to the showrunners J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay, executive producer Lindsey Weber, and the whole cast and crew for their inexhaustible teamwork and exuberant enthusiasm. “Our success can only be gauged by the tens of millions of viewers who are just as enthusiastic about Middle-earth as we are.”
Returning to Middle-earth in the Second Age, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power begins in a period of peace and continues on until the forging of the rings. Events thousands of years before those in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies will be explored in this show. The Rings of Power is helmed by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay who act as executive producers and showrunners. Lindsey Weber, Jason Cahill, Gennifer Hutchison, Callum Greene, J.A. Bayona, Belén Atienza, Justin Doble, Bruce Richmond, and Sharon Tal Yguado will also serve as executive producers on the show with the aforementioned two.
Ron Ames and Christopher Newman produce the series, with Bayona and Charlotte Brändström directing. Co-executive producer, Wayne Che Yip’s name is in the credits. New upcoming episodes of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will debut every week until the season finale on October 14. Prime Video hosts the first two episodes.
