There may be a “Nope” sequel, as Jordan Peele hints to in an interview

The sky has been the focus of many summer movie viewers, whether they be watching the top grads of Top Gun: Maverick or trying to get a glimpse of the UFO in Jordan Peele’s third massively successful picture, Nope. Both have been box office triumphs this summer, but it is the second that has viewers pondering every detail, from the curiously erect shoe to the motorcyclist’s extremely brief appearance.

While Peele was reluctant to give too much away in an interview with The New York Times, he did hint at the prospect of more from O.J. (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald’s (Keke Palmer) universe in response to a fan-discovered detail. Similarly to his Oscar-winning first feature Get Out and his follow-up, Us, Peele’s marketing left audiences wondering in the lead-up to the film’s release. With each new video and teaser, it felt like another aspect of the tale was being revealed. The audience was filled with amazement and curiosity after finally witnessing the awful events occurring on those IMAX displays.

Over its opening weekend, Nope brought in over $148 million around the world, and audiences have been flocking back for more to take in Peele’s massive narrative. When asked the standard questions regarding his use of IMAX cameras and the inspiration for his third feature picture, Peele answered candidly. When the subject of the shoe that defied gravity was brought up, the director began to back off.

As for the specifics of the sequence, Peele said, “But I can say, from a character-driven aspect, the scene is about a time in which a dissociative psychological switch gets flicked for the character,” politely declining to elaborate. Even though the film was about a giant UFO pursuing the residents of a quiet California gulch, it was the sight of one strange, erect shoe that really got everyone on edge. A young Ricky ‘Jupe’ Park (Steven Yeun) on the set of the family-friendly sitcom Gordy’s Home! witnesses a horrifying bloodbath and notices that his co-shoe, star’s which had been misplaced in the mayhem, is now pointed heavenward. In light of Gordy the Chimp’s assault, Peele was quizzed about IMDB’s “Nobody” persona. Michael Busch, a comedian who has been in several guest spots and commercials, is billed for the role but does not make an appearance in the finished film.

Busch was briefly spotted in one of Nope’s trailers, strolling peacefully across what looked like a movie lot with his hands in his pockets and a relaxed smile on his face. The irony is that everyone seems to be falling over themselves to flee the set, which they believe is being slaughtered. When asked about this mysterious figure, Peele thanked the audience for their detective work and said: “I can guarantee you that no one has shared that person’s tale yet. In other words, I’m delighted people are paying attention, but it’s still annoying. My guess is that they will learn more about these topics in the not-too-distant future. None of these tales has become old to us.”

In spite of the fact that Ricky’s struggle to get beyond his childhood trauma is the connecting thread between the two stories, Gordy’s Home! is overshadowed by Haywood’s search for the ideal photograph. Peele’s deliberately obtuse response suggests there may be a sequel, what with Nobody not appearing in the film proper but making an unnerving cameo in the trailer. There’s no denying that the Nope fanbase would go crazy for a prequel movie, but at this point, it’s anyone’s guess whether or not one would really be made.
Indeed, the film is still in cinemas and can be rented on video-on-demand (VOD) from all the main sites.
