The next sci-fi thriller will feature Xochitl Gomez and Mary Elizabeth Winstead in lead roles. The two have reportedly been hired for roles in the forthcoming film Ursa Major. Winstead will portray Natalie’s mother, Charlie, and Gomez will play her. Ursa Major observes the two as they flee from pursuers on an Earth-like world. But now that she’s older, Natalie has doubts about her mom’s choices. She’s curious about their background and how they came to be here on Earth. Gomez’s acting resume features roles as diverse as America Chavez in this year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Dawn Schafer in the premiere season of The Baby-Sitters Club on Netflix.
Kate in 2021, Huntress/Helena Bertinelli in 2020’s Birds of Prey, and Gail in 2019’s The Parts You Lose are just a few of Winstead’s prior roles. The Baker brothers, Jonathan and Josh, will helm the picture. They directed Kin (2018), which featured Myles Truitt, Jack Reynor, and Zo Kravitz. Patrick Somerville, Colleen O’Brien, and Katie French all contributed to the script for the film. Somerville, through his company Tractor Beam, will also serve as the film’s producer. The movie will include David Eisenberg serving as an executive producer via his company Tractor Beam.
John Finnemore of Lost City, Mason Novick of MXN Entertainment, and Allen Fischer and Brian Steinberg of Artist First will all serve as producers on the project, with James Hoppe and Jack Byrnes also serving as executive producers for Lost City. World distribution rights for Ursa Major will be handled by XYZ Films. In addition to the Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt-starring Ash (directed by Flying Lotus) and the Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton-starring Blackberry (also directed by Baruchel) and the Mads Mikkelsen-starring The Black Kaiser (directed by Jonas kerlund), XYZ Films plans to try to sell the film Ursa Major at the Toronto International Film Festival. A possible release date for Ursa Major has not been mentioned.
