There is no denying that Michelle Yeoh is having a fantastic year. Yeoh’s dynamic central role in Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All At Once is quickly becoming one of her most defining works, and the awards train is already in motion, but she has rightfully earned fame and acclaim through her exceptional performances in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Sunshine, Crazy Rich Asians, and Tomorrow Never Dies, to name a few. In a recent announcement, the Toronto International Film Festival revealed that Yeoh will be the first recipient of its Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award (TIFF).
This brand-new award celebrates an accomplished female filmmaker who has been an inspiration to other women in the profession. This honour, it was stated by Variety, would be handed out in person during a fundraising dinner on September 11th. Through her nearly 40-year acting career, Yeoh has broken down barriers in film and inspired women of various generations. Yeoh’s filmography includes many others besides the ones already mentioned, including Royal Warriors, Tai Chi Masters, Memoirs of a Geisha, Wing Chun, Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Yeoh’s film-producing career, which began with 2002’s The Touch (which she also co-wrote), will be honoured alongside her decades-long acting career.
The success of her latest leading performance, which is presently the highest-grossing A24 movie by a wide margin, suggests that her legacy will continue to grow. TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey had this to say about Yeoh: “In a word, Michelle Yeoh is revolutionary. Her filmography covers several decades, styles, and countries. This year, in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ she gave a performance that exemplified her boundless talent.”
Yeoh has already been named the recipient of the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, so she’ll have plenty of opportunities to collect honours in the near future.
Since its namesake’s death in February 2020, she will be the award’s inaugural honoree. Yeoh is the first Asian artist to be honoured by the American Film Institute, and she was also named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People. The actress has had a phenomenal year, and she has a lot more work ahead of her. Along with Everything Everywhere All At Once, Yeoh was also heard in Minions: The Rise of Gru and Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, and she’ll soon be seen in Avatar: The Way of Water and The School for Good and Evil. It was also just reported that Yeoh would feature in The Electric State, the newest thriller from Joe and Anthony Russo. These are just a few of the upcoming titles that will feature the Oscar-winning actress, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more about the career of this seasoned celebrity.
