The forthcoming Western Dead for a Dollar will be directed by the same person responsible for the revolutionary neo-western series Deadwood’s pilot. At the 2022 Venice International Picture Festival, which runs from the end of August to the beginning of September, the film is scheduled to have its world debut, and its director, Luc Besson, will be awarded the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker prize in recognition of his career. The release date for the movie, September 30, 2022, was also confirmed. Set in 1897, Christoph Waltz’s Dead for a Dollar recounts the exploits of legendary bounty hunter Max Borlund, who, for some reason, finds himself travelling north of the Mexican border. In this case, he is recruited to find Rachel Kidd (Rachel Brosnahan), the wife of a wealthy businessman who has been kidnapped by Buffalo Soldier Elijah Jones (Brandon Scott).
While travelling south, he learns that the woman and her apparent abductor were actually lovers who had to escape her violent husband. Along the way, he runs across Joe Cribbens (Willem Dafoe), an outlaw and gambler who has been Borlund’s sworn adversary since Borlund put Cribbens to prison. It’s unclear how she and he will interact on his quest to locate Rachel. Jeremy Wall, Kirk D’Amico, and Carolyn McMaster are producing the film, while Hill and Matt Harris penned the script. In addition to Warren Burke and Benjamin Bratt, the cast also included Hamish Linklater and Guy Burnet. Hill has a history with Westerns, beginning with the Palme d’Or-nominated The Long Riders (1980) and continuing with Geronimo (1993) and Wild Bill (1995). Hill has had a long and successful career in the film industry, working on everything from small, personal character pieces to massive, spectacle-driven blockbusters, and winning praise and honours for each.
He even won an Emmy and a DGA Award in 2005 for the aforementioned Deadwood. He worked as a producer or executive producer on all three Alien sequels, beginning with 1979’s original starring Sigourney Weaver in the title role. He is best known for helming such blockbusters as 48 Hrs. and Another 48 Hrs., The Warriors, Streets of Fire, Brewster’s Millions, and Extreme Prejudice. Hill won the Director’s Guild of America Award and his second Emmy for directing the television movie Broken Trail. After 2016’s The Assignment, which starred Michelle Rodriguez, and 2012’s Bullet to the Head, which starred Sylvester Stallone, Hill will direct his third picture in the last 20 years with Dead for a Dollar.
Several institutions throughout the globe have honoured Hill with retrospectives for his contributions to cinema, including the British Film Institute (1991), the Torino Film Festival (2005), the Cinematheque in Paris (2005), and the Pacific Film Archives at the University of California, Berkeley (2005). Additionally, the American Cinematheque (2006), the San Sebastian Film Festival (2011), and the Munich Film Festival (2012) all presented retrospectives of his work in his honour (2014). Dead for a Dollar is a 2022 film that will have its world debut at the Venice International Film Festival and then hit theatres on September 30 of that year.
Synopsis
Max Borlund, a seasoned bounty hunter, is deep in Mexico when he runs upon Joe Cribbens, a professional gambler and bandit whom he had put to prison. According to the scenario provided to Max, the wife of a wealthy businessman has been kidnapped by Buffalo Soldier Elijah Jones, and Max’s duty is to discover and return Rachel Kidd. Ultimately, Max must fight to protect his reputation.
