Luke Wilson Says They Talked About Making “Legally Blonde 3” Last Summer

The development of Legally Blonde 3 is proceeding at a glacial pace. Fans can only speculate and wait, but star Luke Wilson recently did disclose that the group had a “get-together last summer” to talk about the third movie in the franchise. In the first film, Reese Witherspoon played the role of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who defied expectations by enrolling at Harvard Law School to pursue her ex Warner (Matthew Davis), with Owen Wilson playing her teaching assistant and lawyer love interest Emmett Richmond, nemesis-turned-best friend Vivian Kensington played by Selma Blair, and Paulette Bonafonté played by Jennifer Coolidge.

In the sequel, titled Red, White & Blonde, we see Elle take on her mentor Victoria in a legislative battle to limit the use of animals in cosmetics research (Sally Field). The movie adaptation of Legally Blondes was released straight to DVD, while the musical adaptation of Legally Blonde had an incredibly popular score. When asked about Legally Blonde 3, Wilson said on Good Morning America that he is “as knowledgeable as” the audience. He did, however, add that the group had “a Zoom-call get-together last summer when we all got together and spoke, so it really was fantastic to see everybody.”

This included Matthew Davis, Selma Blair, and Jennifer Coolidge.” Wilson’s comments confirm that all or most of the original cast will return to reprise their roles, despite the lack of narrative and cast specifics. Continuing his praise for his co-star and one of the film’s producers, Witherspoon, he stated, “Since Reese is a smart person, I believe that all that is holding her back is a good screenplay and the perfect moment. Making a new film is something I’d enjoy doing.” Witherspoon said earlier this year that the success of Top Gun: Maverick, starring Tom Cruise, served as an influence for Legally Blonde 3, adding that she “liked the nostalgia piece they placed in it.”

The crew has been thinking “about what we would want to do with Elle Woods and making sure that we have all the same touchstones that mattered to people (back) then.” Now Wilson agreed, saying, “I mean. It’s the kind of movie that gets passed down from mom to kid. Witherspoon will not only appear in and produce the film, but the screenplay will be written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor as well. The release date for Legally Blonde 3 has not been determined.
