Sylvester Stallone is come to disprove the rumour that he is an elderly guy. Introducing the retiring hero of Stallone’s next superhero picture Samaritan in a new trailer and behind-the-scenes look, Euphoria’s Javon “Wanna” Walton. Stallone says he has “a talent for this specific sort of mythology,” aptly describing what drew him to the project in the first place. Movies that pack a punch yet still have emotion. Nothing has ever been more true for the action hero than his breakout role and script, Rocky.
The trailer gives us a glimpse into the friendship between Stallone’s Joe Smith (aka Samaritan) and Walton’s Sam Cleary, and how Cleary convinced Smith to return to his heroic ways in order to combat the increasing crime in the city and bring down its most infamous criminals. Stallone calls the narrative of Samaritan’s reluctant return to combat a “hero story founded in truth.” Up-and-coming Walton also shares some details about his time spent in the same room as the renowned Sylvester Stallone. Director Julius Avery, whose previous work includes the action classics Overlord and Son of a Gun, helmed the MGM production.
The film’s spec script was written by Bragi F. Schut, who then collaborated with graphic novelists Marc Olivent and Renzo Podesta to turn their idea into a reality. Stallone and Walton lead a cast that also includes Martin Starr, Natacha Karam, Moises Arias, and Pilou Asbaek. The film’s first trailer was released in July, courtesy of Prime Video. It took us to Granite City, the made-up location where Samaritan is set. The teaser introduced us to the main characters and the jaded hero who was once at the centre of all the action.
The “heart” that Stallone talks about being in the film is evident between the trailer and this teaser. A lot of things went wrong with Samaritan in 2019, as they did for a lot of other movies that were supposed to come out in 2019, because of the COVID-19 virus. In February of 2020, filming finally got underway, but much like the rest of the globe, it was quickly halted owing to the pandemic. Production resumed in October 2020, and after many premiere date shifts, the film will debut on Prime Video on August 26, 2021.
