The Hunger Games spinoff The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has added Oscar winner Viola Davis to its ensemble, so everything is prepared for launch. Davis will join an impressive cast that also includes Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Tom Blyth, Rachel Zegler, and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones). Dr Volumnia Gaul, the mastermind of the tenth annual Hunger Games, will be portrayed by Davis. When asked about Davis’ casting, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President Nathan Kahane praised his acting skills, saying, “Viola Davis is a natural.” And we are pleased to be carrying on that legacy with Viola Davis in the role of Volumnia Gaul in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2.
Her imposing strength will lend an air of dread to the proceedings. Director Francis Lawrence, who helmed the first two Hunger Games films and will return to the helm for the prequel, has also spoken enthusiastically about working with Davis. As Davis’s Dr Gaul, said, “she is as vicious as she is inventive and as scary as she is formidable.” Lawrence continued, “because of the beautifully nuanced intelligence and emotion she gives to every job,” the production team had long wanted Davis to portray the part.
Gaul, a bright and unconventional strategist, plays a significant role in moulding a young Coriolanus Snow into the man he will become, as the aforementioned quote elaborates. Thank goodness we have an actor of Viola’s calibre to portray the lead. Since starting her career in earnest in 1992, Viola Davis has played a wide variety of characters. Davis has experience playing villains; in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, she played the fearsome Amanda Waller. In one episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, she played a serial murderer, which may be the most sinister part she has ever played.
Davis, before appearing as the antagonist in the Hunger Games prequel, will play General Nanisca, the leader of an all-female army, the Agojie, of the African kingdom of Dahomey, as they fight to repel western forces that seek to disrupt their way of life in the upcoming historical drama, The Woman King. Davis has been recognised for her outstanding performance on both the big and small screens. She is the only African-American to win the acting treble (an Emmy, a Tony, and an Oscar).
Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, together with the film’s director, Lawrence, will produce The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games, & Tim Palen, a film producer, serve as executive producers. On November 17th, 2023, you may expect the release of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
Synopsis
‘Years before he would become the dictatorial President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the final hope for his fading dynasty, a once-proud family that has fallen from favour in a post-war Capitol. In the lead-up to the 10th annual Hunger Games, young Snow is worried about his assignment to guide Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from the poor District 12. After Lucy Gray’s rebellious performance during the reaping ceremony captures the attention of all of Panem, Snow begins to believe that he has a chance to change the outcome. In their struggle to stay alive, Snow and Lucy must combine their natural flair for performance with their newly acquired political acumen.
