Fans of the horror genre will have much to be excited about in 2023, despite the fact that 2018 is closing down with movies like Bodies Bodies Bodies and the forthcoming Halloween Ends. After the popularity of Scream 2022 earlier this year, the sixth instalment in the franchise, tentatively named Scream 6, is cutting its way to theatres in 2019. Set photographs released during the summer teased the return of characters like Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers, who had been absent since the fourth chapter.
Cox has just announced that filming on the sequel is complete. During the weekend, Cox made the news with a hilarious video posted to her Instagram account. The actress posted a video to her YouTube channel informing her followers that she had just returned from Vancouver, Canada, where production was underway on Scream 6. But her thoughts are cut short when Cox’s surveillance footage reveals the reappearance of Ghostface, who is slowly making their way into the home.
Like the moment in Scream 4 where Gale sets up hidden cameras all throughout Stab-A-Thon and Ghostface eventually shuts them out, this meta interaction is typical of the Scream franchise. It’s hard to realise that Scream 6 will be released in around seven months. Scream was a surprise hit at the movie office this year, and it was a worthy sequel to the original picture in the franchise.
It paid homage to Wes Craven in a moving way, while also injecting the genre with a plethora of new faces and perspectives. The sixth film’s narrative is being kept under wraps, but it will follow Sam, Tara, Mindy, and Chad “as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a new chapter.” Set photographs seem to confirm the rumours that the movie was shot in New York City. Given that Gale relocated to New York to advance her journalism profession (as revealed in Scream 2022), this is an important development.
Since this is Gale’s “home turf,” it will be fascinating to witness how Ghostface’s presence affects his behaviour throughout the film. Not only is Sidney (Neve Campbell) not in Scream 6, but Gale’s character is expected to have a larger part as a result. While we don’t know what will happen to Gale in the next sequel, Cox’s video is a nice reminder of how much she enjoys working on this property and playing this legendary character. New Ghostface suspects like Henry Czerny, Dermot Mulroney, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra, Samara Weaving, and Tony Revolori join returning survivors Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Hayden Panettiere. With Cox’s work on the picture completed, we may soon learn that Scream 6 has ended production. Furthermore, Scream 2022 is now available on Paramount+ for streaming.
