When compared to other high school television series, Euphoria is at the cutting edge in depicting the uglier side of adolescent culture. Even though relatively few of the students in the high school really bother to carry things like notebooks or book bags, the high school setting has become a defining feature of the programme. Zendaya, the series’ actress and executive producer, recently indicated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the next third season would forgo the high school setting completely to follow the characters outside of high school. Zendaya has commented, “I believe it’ll be great to develop the characters out of high school,” when asked about her expectations for Season 3.
She went on to discuss her own character, Rue, who finished the previous season in an emotional well after failing at yet another recovery attempt, and her aspirations for her. I’m intrigued by the prospect of witnessing Rue’s sobriety process, however disorganised it may appear. As for the rest of the characters, she continued to speculate, stating, “…with all the characters, in the sense that they’re trying to figure out what to do with their life when high school is through and what sort of people they want to be.”
Zendaya also mentioned in her interview how the second season delves even farther into the characters’ psyches, from the degree of Cassie’s objectification to Lexi’s sense of invisibility. She said that this season’s standout feature was the opportunity to learn more about the “other characters.” As for a repeat performance in season three, “I think we can accomplish it again,” she said. “There’s so much talent out there; it’s important that everyone has a shot at success.”
Even more remarkably, Euphoria has shown to be a rich source of talent. Many up-and-coming actors and actresses have been featured on the show, from Maude Apatow to Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi. In light of the fact that Season 3 may not premiere until 2024, skipping ahead in time makes sense solely for that season. Even more importantly, as Zendaya herself said, a time leap might provide the show with an opportunity to delve further into the characters and the repercussions of their choices during the first two seasons. The show has never been reluctant to experiment with its story. What the upcoming season holds, though, is unknown.
Zendaya also elaborated on her growing on-screen and off-screen presence in the show, saying: I’ve been involved from the very beginning all the way through the editing process, and I think that’s really neat. That type of practical training is rare to come by, and producers of all stripes have their own preferred methods. For every one of us, this is a labour of love.
