DC fans are still coming to terms with the disappointing cancellation of Batgirl, despite it having been over two weeks. The movie’s fate only becomes more difficult to accept with each additional behind-the-scenes photo or story point revealed by people like Leslie Grace, the lead actress, or the filmmakers Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi. There were many reasons to be thrilled about Batgirl, but one of the less well-known facts was that Natalie Holt, the composer for Loki, was composing the score. Holt finally spoke up about the movie’s cancellation. When asked if she had started writing the soundtrack for Batgirl in an interview with Discussing Film, Holt answered, “I had composed maybe an hour and a half of music.
It has been my project for a year. So sure, what happened to it is very awful. Holt continued by describing her impressions of the movie: “I was on-site during the holidays, and Adil and Bilall really enjoyed Loki, which is how I was chosen to do the music for Batgirl. It’s unfortunate that after all that time—say, a year of development—it won’t be available to the public. Yes, that’s very depressing. When asked whether she had any further information to contribute regarding her work on the movie, Holt said, “I don’t know. It really is a shame, in my opinion. I can only say that it was a joy working with the participants. The news about Batgirl has gotten a lot of depressing reactions.
Observing Holt’s perspective merely makes things more depressing. With her soundtrack for the Disney+ series Loki and Obi-Wan Kenobi being her hallmark work, Holt has quietly emerged as one of the greatest composers working today. With Loki, Holt offered the MCU a new sci-fi feel that was almost John Carpenter-esque, and it’s possibly the finest soundtrack ever created. It was going to be interesting to watch what flavour she added to the Batgirl character and the DC Universe as a whole as a result of this.
The movie was intended to solidify Michael Keaton’s portrayal of Batman in the DCEU while debuting lesser-known antagonists like Firefly and Killer Moth to a wider audience. Once more, it would have been interesting to hear the sounds Holt planned to give each of those recognisable figures. The most challenging aspect of working in the entertainment industry is highlighted by remarks like these. Being an artist, it’s quite upsetting to have your labours go in vain and go unnoticed. That is brought to light by Holt’s tragic remarks, and it is evident that this wound is still very raw for many people.
The fact that Holt is a fantastic composer and that she will be back for Loki Season 2 doesn’t make it any easier to think about the constantly evolving tale, though.
