High School, a new series from Amazon Freevee, has just had its launch date announced alongside the release of a teaser video and photographs. The streaming service premiere date for the eight-part series is set for October 14. The series, based on Tegan and Sara Quin’s 2019 New York Times Best-Selling Memoir of the same name, will premiere on Amazon Freevee in the middle of October with four episodes running all at once.
The show follows Tegan and Sara, played by TikTok’s creators Railey and Seazynn Gilliland in their first TV acting roles. A coming-of-age story, the show will follow the two sisters as they navigate high school life next door to each other while set against the grunge and rave culture of the ’90s. The sisters’ bond and the friendships they form with other pupils are highlighted in the brand-new teaser trailer published in conjunction with the release date announcement.
The teaser reveals many of the emotional and social hurdles the duo will experience with each other and their peers, from the highs of connecting via singing and songwriting to the lows that only brothers have. The film’s international debut will take place at TIFF in September. Esther McGregor plays series regular Natalie, and guest appearances include Cobie Smulders (The Avengers, How I Met Your Mother) and Kyle Bornheimer (Marriage Story, Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Phoebe (Olivia Rouyre), Maya (Amanda Fix), Ali (Brianne Tju; I Know What You Did Last Summer); Lily (Geena Meszaros; Under the Banner of Heaven); Evan (CJ Valleroy; NCIS: Los Angeles); and David (Nate Corddry; For All Mankind) are all regulars.
The series is a collaboration between Amazon Studios and Plan B Entertainment, winner of both an Emmy and an Oscar. The Quin sisters, together with Clea DuVall, Laura Kittrell, and Plan B’s Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Carina Sposato, served as executive producers on the production. DuVall and Kittrell are not only the executive producers, but also the showrunners, writers, and directors of many episodes. On October 14, High School will debut on Amazon Freevee.
Synopsis
The tale of High School is one of coming into one’s own, a journey made more difficult when one has a twin whose own path of coming into their own mirrors their own in many ways. The story is set against the grunge and rave scenes of the ’90s and follows two sisters who grew up in the same building but have quite different memories of their childhood.
