The first photos from Brie Larson’s upcoming Apple TV+ series Lessons in Chemistry, in which she co-stars with Lewis Pullman as her on-screen love interest, have been released (Top Gun: Maverick). The Apple Studios series, which Larson also executive produces, is written and executive produced by Lee Eisenberg (WeCrashed), who has been nominated for an Emmy Award a whopping six times. The story of Elizabeth Zott (Larson), a woman in the 1950s with dreams of becoming a scientist in a male-dominated society, is at the heart of Lessons in Chemistry, a film based on a novel by novelist, scientific editor, and copywriter Bonnie Garmus of the same name.
She is the lab assistant for the renowned scientist Calvin Evans (Pullman), with whom she has strong romantic feelings. But her plans have to be put on hold when she discovers she is pregnant, loses her job, and must rely on her own resourcefulness as a single mother to get by. To go back to what she loves most—science—she decides to present a culinary programme on television in the hopes of inspiring the world’s neglected housewives. The first picture depicts Elizabeth and Calvin working diligently in the laboratory, despite the fact that Calvin’s attention is constantly drawn to Elizabeth rather than the task at hand (setting up their equipment).
Both of them had unconventional relationships for the time period in the novel. Elizabeth is determined to pursue her own scientific career and is unwilling to settle for merely adopting Calvin’s surname and becoming known as the “wife of the great scientist.” Even yet, the second picture shows them having fun in the fresh air, so their chemistry must be rather good. Elizabeth’s eyes tell us she appreciates being in Calvin’s company. A remarkable cast featuring NAACP Award winner Aja Naomi King (How to Get Away with Murder) and multiple Emmy and Golden Globe winner Beau Bridges joins Larson and Pullman in the drama (The Fabulous Baker Boys).
Kevin Sussman, Thomas Mann, Patrick Walker, and Stephanie Koenig (The Flight Attendant; Gaslit; Winning Time; The Rise of the Lakers’ Dynasty) round out the ensemble (Better Call Saul). In this capacity, Allan-Blitz will work under Larson’s The Great Unknown Productions brand alongside Larson as co-executive producer. The screenplay for Lessons in Chemistry was written by Susannah Grant, who also serves as an executive producer on the film. Bateman, Costigan, Eisenberg, and Sandy of Aggregate Films, Sandy and Garmus of Piece of Work Entertainment, and Shore and Garmus of Erin Brockovich’s production company, Universal Pictures, also serve as producers. The release date for Lessons in Chemistry has not been set.
