The name GoldenEye 007 will come up on 10 out of ten lists of the finest video games of the late ’90s. The James Bond-inspired game became a touchstone for gamers and developers alike, and it set the bar high for the following two decades of games. All of this is chronicled in GoldenEra, a film that gives an in-depth look at the birth and demise of the groundbreaking team responsible for the iconic game.
Cinedigm has exclusively informed Collider that it has purchased the title and provided us with a premiere date for the documentary: Two weeks from now, on August 23rd, you may watch it digitally or on demand. Since Pierce Brosnan was the original James Bond before Daniel Craig took up the role, it should come as no surprise that GoldenEye is based on the 1995 film of the same name. The Nintendo 64 game, however, found success even among those who hadn’t seen the movies.
The game’s groundbreaking visuals and 3D gameplay helped accelerate its success (for the time). In GoldenEra, the people who contributed to and experienced this shift in video game culture are front and centre. In addition to interviews with Robert Bowling (FMR Creative Strategist at Infinity Ward and the voice of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare) and Peer Schneider (Chief Content Officer at IGN), the documentary also features commentary from Mick Gordon (Music Composer on DOOM Eternal, Wolfenstein, and Prey), and others in the first-person shooter industry.
Yolanda Macias, Cinedigm’s chief content officer, released a statement in which she discussed the video game industry’s appreciation for GoldenEye and why GoldenEra is such a crucial addition to their library. Twenty years after its first release, “GoldenEye” has had a significant influence on the game industry. This documentary has a lot of great content that fans will enjoy. Anyone who enjoyed the 1990s, video games, conventions, or James Bond will feel a pang of nostalgia when watching this film.
On August 23rd, Cinedigm will launch the digital and on-demand premiere of GoldenEra.
