It was revealed today that Sam Mendes’ Empire of Light would have its European debut at the BFI London Film Festival. Empire of Light, which Mendes wrote, directed, and produced, is one of the most anticipated films on the festival circuit. A lovely love story set in the early 1980s, Empire of Light promises to delve into the wonder of film. The plot of the film is still a mystery, unfortunately. Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Micheal Ward (Blue Story), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Tom Brooke, Hannah Onslow, Toby Jones, Crystal Clarke, and Tanya Moodie all appear in Mendes’s Empire of Light.
Empire of Light is not only Mendes’ first major film since 1917, but also a 2019 war drama that was nominated for 10 Oscars and won three, including Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects. And thus, there are many good reasons for us to anticipate the movie. On Wednesday, October 12 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, the American Express Gala will host the European premiere of Empire of Light. Attendees of the BFI London Film Festival will not only get to view Mendes’ film months before its official release, but they will also get the chance to meet the cast and crew of Empire of Light.
All the major players, including Colman, Ward, Firth, Jones, Moodie, Brooke, and Clarke, will be at the premiere, including director Sam Mendes, producer Pippa Harris, and director Sam Mendes himself. Mendes stated this about the European premiere of Empire of Light at the 66th BFI London Film Festival: I couldn’t be more thrilled to have my film included in the AMEX Gala at this year’s BFI London Film Festival. I’m excited to screen “Empire of Light” in my hometown since it means so much to me.
Director of the BFI London Film Festival Tricia Tuttle added: “The prospect of presenting Sam Mendes’s upcoming film at the BFI London Film Festival piqued my interest when I learned that it would revolve around a movie theatre. When it comes to evoking the atmosphere of the South coast of England in the 1980s, Mendes is at the top of his game. Community, narrative, and the magic of the movies are all discussed in “Empire of Light,” as is the excitement of seeing a movie in a dark theatre and the tactile delights of celluloid. At the BFI, we feel particularly strongly about these issues.
Olivia Colman and Michael Ward deliver great centre performances, but the entire cast is outstanding. At the 66th BFI London Film Festival, American Express will host the European premiere of “Empire of Light” as part of the festival’s American Express Gala “. From Wednesday, October 5th, through Sunday, October 16th, is the 66th annual BFI London Film Festival. On December 9th, you can see Empire of Light in cinemas.
