Producers have chosen Maria Bakalova to star in films produced by Jerry Seinfeld and Sofia Coppola

Deadline reported today that Maria Bakalova, star of the Netflix series Bodies Bodies Bodies, has been cast in not one, but two upcoming projects. The actress has signed on to star in both Fairyland, directed by Andrew Durham, and Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story, directed by Jerry Seinfeld. Fairyland is the first full-length film that Durham will helm, and it is based on Alysia Abbott’s memoir of the same name. This book delves into the experiences of San Franciscans in the years preceding up to, during, and following the height of the AIDS pandemic in the city in the 1970s and 1980s.

The narrative focuses on Steve Abbott’s father’s experience of life during this harrowing period in American history, and it also depicts Abbott himself struggling with AIDS before his untimely death. While her role in the production remains unknown, Bakalova joins the likes of Emilia Jones, Scoot McNairy, Geena Davis, Cody Fern, Adam Lambert, Bella Murphy, and Nessa Dougherty on the already impressive call sheet. American Zoetrope, run by Sophia and Roman Coppola, will produce. And for Netflix, there’s Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story, which Seinfeld co-wrote with Spike Feresten, Andy Robin, and Barry Marder. The film will transport viewers to Michigan in 1963, telling the tale of how Kellogg’s and Post battled to become the dominant brand in the market for breakfast pastries that could be made at home at any time of day.

An all-star cast, including Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer, Tom Lennon, Adrian Martinez, Bobby Moynihan, Max Greenfield, Christian Slater, and Sarah Cooper, will act alongside Seinfeld in the feature film. Similar to Fairyland, it is still unknown what part Bakalova will play in Unfrosted, however, it does indicate that she will make a brief cameo appearance. Because of her role as Borat’s daughter in the sequel to Borat, in which she co-starred with Sacha Baron Cohen, Bakalova’s career took off like a rocket.

She received an Oscar nomination and has since been cast in the new film Bodies Bodies Bodies from A24 and Halina Reijn. Bakalova will next be featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as Cosmo the Spacedog, as well as in Prime Video and Grindstone’s The Honeymoon, which she also stars in and produces.
No official release date has been set for either production just yet, but updates will be provided as they become available.
