Mo, a comedy series produced by A24 and written by Mohammed “Mo” Amer and Ramy Youssef, has recently released its official trailer on Netflix. Youssef made a parallel comedy show for Hulu, starring himself and Amer. It was named Ramy. Mo will chronicle the fictitious story of Amer, a Palestinian immigrant who grew up in Texas. Amer is joined in Mo by Teresa Ruiz, Farah Bsieso, Omar Elba, and Tobe Nwigwe. Mo’s trailer shows the protagonist struggling to make ends meet while not having citizenship in either the United States or Palestine, where his family originates. Mo, who cannot find regular work due to his lack of immigration documents, makes ends meet by selling stuff out of the trunk of his car. Mo’s already busy life as a refugee adds the pressure of dealing with his devout girlfriend Maria, his judgemental mother Yusra, and his concerned sibling Sameer.
Mo seems like it will be an emotional drama with some thoughtful insights into issues of race, self-definition, and the challenges of being an immigrant in the United States.
Mo is an original series created by Amer and Youssef, who will also act as writers and executive producers for the show. Director Solvan “Slick” Naim, whose previous credits include episodes of It’s Bruno and Snowfall, will be at the helm for the whole run.
Mo is executive produced by Ravi Nandan, Hallie Sekoff, Harris Danow, and Luvh Rakhe. The full runtime of Mo is two hours. According to Indiewire, Youssef likes to create TV with a “short film atmosphere,” so viewers may anticipate some highly cinematic episodes from Mo. Comedian Amer is well-known for his role as himself in the film Ramy, alongside the actor Youssef. Amer’s future role is in DC’s Black Adam, which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. In Yorgos Lanthimos’s next film, Poor Things, which he also directed, Youssef will have a supporting role. Along with Gaten Matarazzo and Simon Pegg, he will provide his voice for a character in the forthcoming animated adventure comedy Hump.
On August 24th, Netflix will release the first season of Mo.
