Pearl, a prequel to X by A24, is the latest in a long line of horror classics to undergo the prequel treatment. Dawn of the Discs has revealed, about a month before its debut, that fans can pre-order Lionsgate’s gory prequel on Blu-ray. Fans were ecstatic to learn that West’s slasher X would be receiving a theatrical release for Pearl only months after the first picture debuted, in stark contrast to the situation with 1987’s Predator, whose prequel Prey is wallowing in post-premiere glory (as it should) some forty years later. In fact, a preview for Pearl was included in the X end credits, proving that preparations for this double feature began long before audiences saw the film in cinemas. Both videos were shot in a bold attempt to capture the epidemic simultaneously.
That’s what I call assurance in one’s abilities! Lionsgate took a chance on this film, and the gamble paid off since the film has quickly become a fan favourite. Since the future of several major streaming services is uncertain, more and more fans are eager to acquire physical media; luckily, Pearl can be pre-ordered right now at its retail value of $39.99 on Blu-ray and $29.96 on DVD. Pearl, a young lady with Hollywood lights in her eyes and blood on her hands, is played once again by Mia Goth, X’s “greatest star the world has ever known.” The protagonist of Pearl (perhaps named Theda) is a young lady who, in 1918, during the height of World War I, finds herself in a remote area.
The novel will follow her as she attempts to break out of her limiting surroundings. Pearl is enamoured by the movies despite feeling trapped by her obligations to her parents, especially her ill father, and their farm. In the preview, her mother is portrayed as a strict guardian who threatens to deny Pearl freedom from the farm, but Pearl makes it plain that nothing can stop her destructive enterprise.
She will not let anyone—not the popular girls in town or even her own family—stop her from achieving her goals. In addition to Goth, David Corenswet (The Politician) will represent the younger version of Howard, Pearl’s violent but supporting husband, a role first held by Stephen Ure in X. In addition to Emma Jenkins-Purro and Jack McBrayer, the cast includes Tandi Wright (Jack the Giant Slayer), Matthew Sunderland (The Lost City of Z), and others, none of whom have been confirmed for their respective parts. West wrote and directed Pearl, and he’s responsible for other modern genre classics including The Innkeepers, the eerie slow burner The Sacrament, and the terrifying The House of the Devil.
Actress Goth, who is acknowledged as a co-writer on the prequel, is making her directorial debut with this film. Sam Levinson, creator and showrunner of Euphoria, and Kid Cudi, a musician and rapper who acted in the film X, are among the many producers behind the movie. The DVD and Blu-ray of Pearl are now available for pre-order on Amazon, and they will ship on November 8. Pearl movie trailer in its entirety; in theatres September 16th.
