Four honours were given to ABC’s new comedy Abbott Elementary, which has completely dominated the field at this year’s Television Critics Awards (TCA). It won several awards, including Program of the Year, and its actress, Quinta Brunson, won an award for Individual Achievement in Comedy. Because of these nominations, Abbott Elementary became the most-nominated show of the year according to the Television Critics Association. In addition to “Outstanding New Program,” Abbott also took up “Outstanding Achievement in Comedy” honours. As amazing as these accolades are for a first-season network comedy, the Program of the Year award stands out as the most prestigious.
The Brunson series triumphed against established dramas like Better Call Saul and newcomers like HBO’s The White Lotus and Apple TV+’s Severance. Abbott beat over long-running sitcoms like Barry and Atlanta for the comedy award. Principal Ava Coleman’s portrayer Janelle James came in second place to Brunson in the Individual Achievement in the Comedy category. The latest nod brings Abbott’s total to five. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences recognised Abbott Elementary with six nominations for the 74th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
The cast also includes Tyler James Williams, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and William Stanford Davis in addition to Brunson and James. Ralph and Williams were also nominated for Emmys, along with Brunson and James. A documentary film team follows the staff and administration of Philadelphia’s Willard R. Abbott Elementary School for a year. Brunson portrays the upbeat, youthful second-grade teacher Janine, who frequently rallies the other teachers to remedy the harm or mistakes committed by the dumb, pop-culture-obsessed principal, Ava (James) (James).
A terrible lawsuit claims Brunson and ABC stole the basis of the show from another screenwriter, dampening the delight of the renewal and these accolades. The sitcom was renewed for a 2nd season earlier this year. Mandy Moore, who played Rebecca in the last season of NBC’s This Is Us, won the award for Individual Achievement in Drama. Dopesick, which features Michael Keaton, Will Poulter, and Rosario Dawson, earned Hulu the award for Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries, or Specials. The third season of Succession was the deciding factor in the show taking home the trophy for Best Drama.
Ted Danson and Steve Martin both received the TCA’s Career Achievement Honoree, as is customary at award presentations. The Television Critics Association presented the Heritage Award to I Love Lucy. On September 21, ABC will air the second season premiere of Abbott Elementary.
