Sisters who cast spells are back! Mary (Kathy Najimy), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Winifred (Bette Midler) Sanderson appear on the cover of this month’s D23 magazine to promote the upcoming Hocus Pocus sequel. One of the covers features the witchy ladies gazing up at the moon while standing with their backs to the camera and their trademark cloaks billowing in the breeze, with the slogan “We’re back, witches!” The other appears to be them in the midst of musical performance and provides a better frontal view of their clothes.
Although it’s difficult to think of a song that might top “I Put a Spell on You,” it’s as if the three witches haven’t aged a day. Anne Fletcher directs Hocus Pocus 2 from a scenario by Jen D’Angelo. The film is a sequel to the classic from 1993. The movie will see the Sanderson sisters return after three young ladies transport them to modern-day Salem by mistake. The three girls must now devise a strategy to prevent the world from falling further into disarray at the hands of the child-hungry witches. Many people have been waiting decades for a sequel to the original film, and in September, they will get their dream when it premieres on Disney+.
Forgive the pun, but Kathy functioned as the custodian of the Black Flame Candle, as Midler explained to D23 Magazine about her time back on set. When asked for clarification, she said, “She was emphatic about what the fans would and wouldn’t tolerate, and we sort of followed her lead.” Although the original film was met with mixed reviews upon its first release, it has now become a cult favourite thanks to its annual screening on television during the Halloween season. Max (Omri Katz), a young boy, mistakenly ignites the cursed Candle of Black Flame and must save his sister Dani (Thora Birch) with the assistance of his crush Allison (Vinessa Shaw) and a black cat named Thackery Binx (voiced by Tim Curry).
The three sisters have been revived after 300 years. Hocus Pocus 2 features a cast that includes not just the returning Midler, Parker, and Najimy but also newcomers like Whitney Peak as Becca, Lilia Buckingham as Cassie Traske, Belissa Escobedo as Izzy, and Hannah Waddingham as The Witch. The second instalment of “Hocus Pocus” will debut on Disney+ on September 30.
