Many DC fans have been downcast over the past 24 hours after learning that Warner Brothers Discovery will not be releasing Batgirl. The release date for Joker: Folie a Deux has been announced, which is wonderful news for DC fans. In an exclusive report, Deadline has revealed that the highly anticipated sequel to the record-breaking comic book movie will be released on October 4, 2024. Joker 2 will hit theatres on the fifth anniversary of the debut of the original picture. Considering Joker’s massive success at the movie office upon its October 2019 debut, this makes perfect sense. After a record-breaking opening weekend ($94 million), the Joker’s rule only intensified.
Over one billion dollars would be made at the global box office by the time the film’s run came to a conclusion. Joker may have seemed like a one-off at its first release, but money speaks, and a sequel was shortly greenlit. Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips, the film’s director and star, will be back, although storyline details are still sketchy. Additionally, it has been rumoured that WB is considering Lady Gaga for their Harley Quinn. The rumour also stated, in an odd turn of events, that the movie would be a musical.
Since the first film was a gritty rated-R criminal drama, this came as a shock to many viewers. WB hasn’t confirmed it yet, but Joker has had several identities over the years. Aside from being a foolhardy clown and a cold-blooded killer, he has also been known to break into song on rare occasions. When the lights went out on the first movie, there was a lot of room for speculation. It was one of those stories that had you thinking, and you probably wondered how much of the movie was true and how much was in The Joker’s imagination.
The sequel looks to be diving deeper into insanity, as suggested by the name Folie A Deux, which refers to a “rare delusional disease shared by two or more persons with intimate emotional relationships.” The bloody musical may be precisely what the doctor ordered to set this film apart from the critically praised original, and the title lends credence to the speculation that Harley may make an appearance. Joker 2 is continuing along at full speed, so at least there’s some good news for DC fans during these trying times. Due in theatres in October 2024, fans will have plenty of opportunities to view Joker and discuss it after its release. This creative take on the classic DC villain is now available to view on HBO Max.
