Madame Web, a film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, was pushed back three months, from July 2023 to October 2023.
Madame Web was formerly scheduled to be in theatres on July 7, 2023. As a stand-alone feature, the film’s release was slated only two weeks before DC’s highly anticipated “game-changing” picture, The Flash. In addition, Sony’s follow-up to the much-loved animated picture from last year, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, came out the same month as Madame Web. By delaying the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming for three months, Sony ensures that there is enough time between the various Spider-Verse films.
Marvel Studios has reserved October 6 as a date for an unannounced film, making Sony a formidable rival. Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson as the title character, will be the first film in Sony’s Marvel Cinematic Universe to have a female lead. Madame Web, a clairvoyant elderly woman in the comic books, is regularly called upon by Peter Parker to assist him to discern which actions could have long-term consequences. As the name implies, the heroine is permanently tied to a spiderweb-shaped apparatus that keeps her alive. To yet, Sony has taken many liberties with its Spider-Verse cast members, so it is unclear how the studio will handle the Madame Web adaption.
For example, in the two films starring Tom Hardy as the gooey villain, Venom, the character is no longer linked to Spider-Man.
As with Morbius, another Spider-Man villain who was given his own standalone film with Jared Leto as the hero, the same thing has happened with Venom. Expect Sony to get inventive with Madame Web after Kraven The Hunter turned the classic villain into a guardian of nature. The fact that the heroine was never more than a supporting role in the comic books is especially heartening. S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones, The Defenders) directs from a story by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Morbius). Adam Scott, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, and Tahar Rahim will also appear in the film.
The new release date for Madame Web has been set for October 6, 2023. The film is presently being shot in Boston, and according to reports, at least a portion of Madame Web takes place in a reimagined New York of the year 2000.
