Sox fans, prepare to hang on tight! On Disney+, Disney and Pixar’s Lightyear will be available. On August 3, Disney+ will begin streaming Lightyear, the studio’s latest animated feature film, according to a tweet from Disney and Pixar. Science fiction action adventure explores the narrative of Buzz Lightyear, a beloved figure who served as inspiration for Toy Story’s character. One of Andy’s favourite Toy Story characters, Lightyear is being promoted as a toy based on the movie. Audiences are split about the film’s link to Toy Story, despite a few brief lines of dialogue at the opening of the film.
Disney+ could be a good place for the film to get a second wind. Chris Evans, the Captain America of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, provides the voice of Tim Allen’s beloved character, the Space Ranger, in Lightyear the Space Ranger (The Gray Man, Avengers: Endgame). Buzz, stranded on a hazardous planet 4.2 million years from Earth, never quits searching for a way back home. To help him out, Peter Sohn provides the voice of Sox, a robotic cat friend that accompanies him on his mission (The Good Dinosaur, Ratatouille).
Zurg, a recognisable monster voiced by James Brolin (Traffic, The Amityville Horror) – with his army of vicious robots, directed by unexplained purposes — threatens the mission. Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black, Mrs America) also appears in Lightyear as Alisha Hawthorne, the main character’s commander and best friend. Aduba received criticism for a scene in which she enjoys a brief on-screen kiss with her female companion. Aduba has since apologised.
Others in the cast include Nope, Alice’s Keke Palmer, Thor: Love and Thunder’s Taika Waititi, and Orange Is the New Black’s Dale Soules, who plays Izzy Hawthorne, Mo Morrison, and Darby Steel, respectively, on the Junior Zap Patrol. Mary McDonald-Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Efren Ramirez, Keira Hairston, and Bill Hader are all part of the voice cast for the onboard computer I.V.A.N., Commander Burnside, Airman Daz, and Young Izzy, respectively, in the new animated film.
Director Angus MacLane, who also created the premise and script with Matthew Aldrich and Jason Headley, directed Lightyear. Additional script material was written by Aldrich, Andrew Stanton, and Lauren Gunderson for the picture, which is still playing in theatres. As of this writing, the film has made over $213 million worldwide. Galyn Susman produced the film.
On August 3, Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream Lightyear.
