In addition to Christian Bale’s startling appearance as Gorr, Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster is back in a position that appears refreshingly more important than in the first two films. Love and Thunder has a lot of moving parts, but here are the broad strokes to get a sense of what Thor and his crew will face throughout the plot. In Marvel’s major crossover event Avengers: Endgame, Thor’s mental turmoil and remorse over a self-perceived failure to stop Thanos were on full display for the audience. Comedic relief may have been tactless at times, but he was eventually put back on the road to healing and self-discovery at the end of the film. ‘The Notebook’ After handing up New Asgard’s leadership to Valkyrie, Tho went off on a mission with the Guardians of the Galaxy to save the universe. So, Thor may take a breather from his duties as an Avenger—and his father, Odin—to do some soul-searching, which is the right thing to do at this point in his life.
Love and Thunder give the impression that his time with the Guardians of the Galaxy is only a prelude to the main event. With Waititi’s earlier work on the character in Thor: Ragnarok, anyone acquainted with the MCU and Love and Thunder shouldn’t have any problems fitting in. Jane Foster’s reappearance adds a touch of romance to an otherwise peppy and decidedly ’80s look and vibe. In this new film, Thor will continue his search for inner peace and a revitalised sense of self, following the events of the last Avengers movie.
Mighty THOR
But Foster’s reappearance after two underwhelming performances in the first Thor film and its sequel, Thor: The Dark World, isn’t the only thing that makes this fourth Thor movie so appealing. When she returns as the Mighty Thor, it will be one of the greatest comebacks ever seen. One of her most popular comic book stories will be revisited when she and Valkyrie join forces with Thor to take on an entirely new enemy. A portion of Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor run will be adapted by Waititi, in which Jane becomes a superhero while coping with her cancer diagnosis and treatment. This is a very personal idea, and I’m hoping that Love and Thunder does it justice in terms of heart and effect. When Jane and Thor’s relationship is put under additional emotional strain in this sequel, it will be intriguing to observe how their relationship develops.
Even though Thor’s trademark weapon has become his Stormbreaker axe since Avengers: Infinity War, Mighty Thor has continued to use an improved version of his old hammer Mjolnir. Jane’s new costume, complete with the Norse-inspired helmet, seems like a superb recreation of her comic book counterpart. Portman’s involvement as the Mighty Thor in the next movie is more than a one-dimensional love interest for Kevin Feige and the rest of the heads of Marvel Studios as they plan out the near and distant futures of the MCU.
Gorr the Butcher of Gods
It’s safe to say that Christian Bale’s MCU debut as Gorr the God Butcher, after Natalie Portman’s triumphant comeback in a larger role than ever before, is the most anticipated aspect of Love and Thunder. It’ll be the actor’s first comic book/superhero role since Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy when he played Batman. Gorr the God Butcher first appeared in Thor: God of Thunder #2 in 2013 thanks to creators Aaron and illustrator Esad Ribi. He is a relatively fresh addition to Thor’s rogue’s gallery. His name and the title suggest that Gorr harbours a deep-seated hatred for the gods of the cosmos, thinking them to be self-serving tyrants who should be banished from the planet.
In an undiscovered world that was terribly bleak, his people were left to dwell in filth, according to the comics. He was exiled from his tribe because he didn’t believe in the gods like the rest of them. That they were not the altruistic protectors of the oppressed that Gorr’s tribe had imagined them to be sparked simmering hate in Gorr, who originally did not believe they existed. After Gorr’s mother, lover, and children were killed, he embarked on a genocidal mission to hunt out all the gods, which led him to face off against Thor in the end. While Knull (the father of Venom, Carnage, and other symbiotes) used All-Black the Necrosword as a weapon, it is unclear whether or not this sword will have any connection to Knull’s side of the Marvel Universe.
In addition to his impressive acting skills, Christian Bale is also noted for his ability to play characters who are very different from the ones he portrays on screen. A peek at the design of Bale’s character for Love and Thunder suggests that this villain will be an exciting addition to the film’s cast.
