David O. Russell, a renowned writer and director, is returning with a fresh new amazing ensemble of performers for his upcoming crime thriller set in the 1930s titled Amsterdam. This time around, he has returned to the decade. Collider published a story in April detailing the presentation that 20th Century Studios gave at CinemaCon when they revealed the new title of the picture and provided further details about it. The official trailer and poster for Russell’s newest film were unveiled today by 20th Century Fox, and it features the same high-stakes comedy and star-studded cast as his past work.
The film Amsterdam is a combination of historical truth and fiction; the trailer states that “a lot of this truly happened,” and the film itself has both elements. The premise of the film centres on three characters: two soldiers, played by Christian Bale and John David Washington, and a nurse, played by Margot Robbie, who is falsely accused of a murder and find themselves at the centre of one of the most terrible historical stories in American history.
Because detectives are close on their trail, the three friends are obliged to solve the crime and clear their reputations. In order to do so, they seek the assistance of a wide number of crazy characters who are portrayed by a great number of recognisable personalities. The movie depicts a tragedy that takes place during a noir-like time and hints at a romance as well as potentially some subtle betrayals. However, the film focuses mostly on a number of well-known actors and actresses. The last full-length film that David O. Russell directed was Joy, which was released in 2015 and starred Jennifer Lawrence. Amsterdam is his first film as a filmmaker since Joy.
Now best known for his films starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born) in Silver Linings Playbook and Christian Bale in American Hustle, the filmmaker will reteam with two of his most famous actors, Robert De Niro and Christian Bale, in the next picture Amsterdam. From what the trailer shows, it appears as though this movie will be Russell’s comeback to the big screen. In addition to writing, directing, and producing the film, Russell is also a producer in Amsterdam, along with Christian Bale, Arnon Milchan, Matthew Budman, and Anthony Katagas. Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, and Sam Hanson are serving in the roles of executive producers for this movie.
In addition to Academy Award winner Bale, two-time Oscar nominee Robbie, Washington, and two-time Academy Award winner De Niro, the nominees include Alessandro Nivola (American Hustle), Andrea Riseborough (Matilda), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water), Mike Myers (Austin Powers), Chris Rock (Spiral), Academy Award winner Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhap On November 4, 2022, Amsterdam will make its debut in cinemas for the very first time.
