Remedy Entertainment, the developer behind the original Max Payne games, has teamed up with Rockstar Games to remake the first two games. Rockstar parent firm Take-Two Interactive recently teased new Max Payne projects, so this announcement has been a long time coming. According to the rumour, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stated an interest in revisiting earlier IP and offered pictures from Max Payne 3 as an example during a February 2022 earnings call with investors.
The slideshow reportedly included stills from L.A. Noire and Midnight Club. Players were invited to join Max Payne in a noir-style adventure when the first Max Payne was released in the summer of 2001. The nasty underbelly of New York City was brought to life by Remedy’s clever narrative about a cop-turned-vigilante. A follow-up, 2003’s The Fall of Max Payne, further demonstrated the studio’s mastery of narrative. Take-Two bought the IP for Max Payne in 2002, and in 2012, Rockstar Games brought the character back for a third game. Remedy (through Wario64/Twitter) has announced the remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne without providing much in the way of specific data.
Rockstar Games and the studio will work together to complete the project, which will be released as a “single title” for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms. With Rockstar’s funding, the project is presently in its conceptual phase of development, according to Remedy’s announcement, which also noted that the Northlight engine will power this attempt. For the Max Payne remakes, Remedy’s Northlight Engine should be a godsend. Quantum Break (2016) and Control (2019) were both excellent in terms of looks and gameplay because of the technology.
The long-awaited Alan Wake II will also be brought to life by Northlight, with a release date for PC and current-gen consoles in 2023 still up in the air. In many ways, Max Payne revolutionised gaming when it was released over 20 years ago. The innovative bullet-time mechanism made an unforgettable impression on a generation of gamers and creators alike, as well as pushed the boundaries of storytelling. It will be fascinating to watch how the team at Remedy Entertainment reimagines the first two adventures for current consumers given how the medium has grown since Max’s last journey.
