In celebration of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, a new ASMR video starring Piplup has been published, containing 30 minutes of Piplup shenanigans. Piplup, along with Turtwig and Chimchar, is one of the three starter Pokémon in BDSP. He appears in both the original 2006 Nintendo DS games and the remakes released only last month for the Nintendo Switch.
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are Nintendo and developer ILCA’s latest remakes. Unlike 2018’s Gen 1 remakes Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, they are the first core games not developed by series producer Game Freak. While the two new remakes have been commercial triumphs, jointly selling over six million copies worldwide in their first week on the market, they have drawn considerable fan backlash. Some have criticized the new art style and omitted information, emphasizing flaws that the upcoming Gen 5 Pokémon remakes should presumably avoid.
The Japanese Pokémon YouTube account has released a new ASMR video titled “Hanging Out With Piplup,” in which the Water-type Pokémon is seen doing exactly what the title implies: hanging out in a room. Piplup can be seen roaming the area, playing, and even sleeping, all the while emitting its distinctive sounds. It should be noted, however, that in the Japanese version of Pokémon, Piplup is called Pochama, and so its cries are centered around that word rather than its internationally recognized appellation. There is nothing else in the 30-minute clip, which is, perhaps, the objective of ASMR videos.
This is not the first time the Pokémon Company has created an ASMR video specifically for the Japanese market. The business has created videos of Charmander dozing by a campfire, Squirtle at the beach, and even an ASMR film with Pikachu. Additionally, the Pokémon Kids TV Japan YouTube channel produced an ASMR video featuring Grimer, indicating that the ASMR movement is still quite popular in Japan, spanning many markets and age groups.
As with the previous Pokémon ASMR videos, this current one featuring Piplup is equally charming while also being quite peaceful. This is especially apparent during the segment in which Piplup takes a nap, emphasizing the video’s easygoing tone. While the choice of Piplup as the subject is undoubtedly intended to boost the sales and popularity of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, Piplup is an excellent option nonetheless and possibly the greatest of the three Sinnoh starters for an ASMR movie.
