As part of a partnership with IGN, publisher Square Enix and developer Luminous Productions released a four-minute gameplay clip for Forspoken, which provides a deeper look at the game’s combat, exploration, and user interface. Forspoken is the first game developed by Luminous Productions, which was founded during the development of Final Fantasy XV. It was first shown during the PlayStation 5 reveal event as Project Athia.
Prior to the game’s release in 2022, the publisher teased the title at a Square Enix Presents broadcast earlier this year. The show was a digital event that also previewed the Forspoken title’s release in 2022. In the months since then, more information about the action-RPG has emerged, including a release date of May 2022 – Square Enix revealed this last piece of information during the 2021 Game Awards, which took place late last week. It is in the adventure itself that players will assume the character of Freya Holland, a young lady who has been transported from New York City to the mythical continent of Asia by the forces of fate. While Freya will discover that beauty and magic are abundant across the expansive open-world scenario, she will also discover that dangers lurk in the shadows of the vast landscape. All of this and more has been given a more in-depth examination owing to recently published gameplay footage.
With the help of IGN, Square Enix and Luminous Productions have showcased four minutes of brand-new gameplay footage from Forspoken, which is running on the PlayStation 5. The first minute or two shows Freya navigating a walled city before sprinting to her new location at breakneck speed to complete the journey. Viewers will also get a preview of the open-world map and user interface (UI). The User Interface segment, in particular, showcases the skill system, gear customization, and customizable nail paint styles for Freya’s fingernails, among other features. For a brief period of time, the fighting mechanics of Forspoken take center stage as Freya employs magical talents to fend off a tiny army of attackers in Forspoken.
The combat segment of the gameplay clip depicts Freya launching a variety of projectiles and water-based strikes at various targets. Also, in the middle of the combat, she installs traps to demonstrate how players would have the ability to mix and match gameplay styles depending on their preferences. Users won’t have to worry about repeatedly moving in and out of menus when things get a little intense because these kinds of modifications appear to happen on the fly.
One aspect of Freya’s battle interactions that may grate on the nerves of some players is the frequency with which she speaks. Of course, this type of joking is nothing new. With Nathan Drake in Uncharted, Naughty Dog established the standard for this type of in-game commentary. Guerrilla borrowed Aloy’s quips from the same book in Horizon: Zero Dawn and the result was hilarious. Deacon St. John in Days Gone, on the other hand, was considered to have spoken a little too much. Let’s hope that Luminous Productions is able to find the correct balance in this endeavor.
