Jujutsu Kaisen is getting a new book release for the forthcoming appearance of the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie! Following the huge success of the anime’s inaugural season, Jujutsu Kaisen’s series will be continuing with its first feature film endeavor. Making its premiere in Japan later this year, this new movie adapts series creator Gege Akutami’s original limited prequel series issued some time before the commencement of the main serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. In an unexpected way, this prequel series is getting yet another type of adaptation.
Shueisha has announced that there will be an official companion novel released alongside Jujutsu Kaisen 0 when it enters theaters. Based on the script from writer behind the film, Hiroshi Seko, Baraddo Kitagumi will be composing the novel after penning several other novels for the franchise before. It has yet to be confirmed whether or not this book release will be planned for fans outside of Japan, but it’s certainly another release to look forward to alongside the anime’s huge theatrical run later this year.
Releasing in Japan commencing on December 24th, sadly there is currently no foreign release information for Jujutsu Kaisen 0 just yet. The new movie adapts the highly significant Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School which follows the narrative of Yuta Okkotsu, who is forcefully enrolled in Jujutsu Tech a year before the events of the main series. This narrative fleshes out not just much of the series’ background, but throws some major signals about what to anticipate for the future of the series should the anime make its comeback following the movie.
Viz Media has licensed the original prequel manga for anyone interested, and they define Jujutsu Kaisen 0 as such, “Yuta Okkotsu is an anxious high school student who is struggling from a major problem—his childhood buddy Rika has turned into a Curse and won’t leave him alone. Since Rika is no ordinary Curse, his predicament is observed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where budding exorcists learn how to resist Curses. Gojo gets Yuta to join, but will he learn enough in time to fight the Curse that haunts him?”
