Filmmaker Elizabeth Banks and screenwriter Jimmy Warden collaborated on the 2023 American comedic thriller film Cocaine Bear. The narrative is mostly based on the actual account of the “Cocaine Bear,” an American black bear that consumed almost 34 kilogrammes (75 pounds) of cocaine after it had been accidentally dropped. The film features the talents of Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery, Alden Ehrenreich, Brooklynn Prince, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Margo Martindale, and Ray Liotta. Liotta, who passed away in May of 2022, is honoured throughout the film. On February 24, 2023, Universal Pictures released Cocaine Bear in theatres across the United States. Reviews for the picture were divided, and it has earned $66 million throughout the world.

Plot
Andrew C. Thornton II, a drug courier, dumps a load of cocaine from the sky in 1985. He grabs a duffel bag full of drugs and tries to parachute out, but he knocks himself out on the doorframe and dies from the fall. As his body falls in Knoxville, Tennessee, Bob, a local detective, is able to positively identify him. He deduces that the missing portion of the cocaine was probably supplied by St. Louis drug lord Syd White. Elsa and Olaf were out hiking when a black bear in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest ate part of the cocaine, causing it to become furious and attack the pair. Dee Dee and her mother, the nurse Sari, reside in northeast Georgia. Dee Dee and her buddy Henry decide to spend the day in the woods, away from school, painting a picture of the waterfalls. The two stumble across a block of cocaine on the way to the falls and consume part of it before being mauled by a bear. Sari, accompanied by Liz, a park ranger, and Peter, a wildlife activist, sets out into the woods to look for the children.
Henry is discovered by the trio hanging to a tree to escape the bear. When the bear pounces, Peter trips over some cocaine and accidentally slashes Liz. The bear attacks Peter, who is high on cocaine, and leaves Henry alone. Sari and Henry continue to run deeper into the forest, while Liz has called for backup. Syd has sent his fixer Daveed to St. Louis in an attempt to get the remaining stash of cocaine. Eddie, Syd’s son, has become despondent after the loss of his mother and has abandoned his own son, so Daveed and he takes a trip to Georgia to be with Eddie. They, as well as Bob, have arrived in Georgia. Daveed gets into a scuffle with the Duchamps gang, three woodland thugs, in the forest station. Stache, one of the gang members, brings Daveed and Eddie with him as they try to retrieve part of the cocaine he hid in a gazebo. After escaping the bear’s pursuit, Liz returns to the station. Liz kills one of the Duchamps, Ponytail, by mistake, and then the bear kills the other, Vest. After a brief encounter with the bear, paramedics Beth and Tom come to take Liz to safety.
They try to get away in an ambulance with Liz, but the bear chases after them and hops in. Tom gets eaten by the bear and Liz is murdered when she is thrown from the ambulance and hits the road below. As Beth’s ambulance skids out of control and hits a tree, she is killed when she is thrown through the glass. Dee Dee leaves a trail of paint that Sari and Henry use to find her. As Daveed and Eddie are driven there, they discover Bob already in the gazebo with the hidden duffle containing the cocaine. Bob’s coke bag serves as a diversion while the bear appears. Syd shoots Bob dead out of the blue and admits he is being ordered by higher-ups to recover the cocaine.
Olaf, still in his grief, guides Sari and Henry to the bear’s cave, where they see the animal’s two babies and learn that the bear is a mother. Olaf runs away and gets eaten by a bear. After exploring, Syd, Eddie, and Daveed emerge from the cave on a ledge below the waterfalls. Bear heads back to his den. Once Eddie and Daveed decide to leave the drug business together, they accompany Sari, Henry, and Dee Dee down to the ocean, where they find refuge. Syd, though, is adamant about staying with the cave’s discovered stash of cocaine. He fires at the bear and wounds it but is ultimately killed when the bear and her cubs tear him to shreds. Eddie, joined by Daveed, later finds his son again, while Stache hitchhikes to New York with a duffel bag of cocaine.

Review
Cocaine Bear, which aspires to be a ludicrous, bloody good time, has some cheeky fun by adapting an accurate tale about some missing cocaine and the fuzzy creature that consumes them, turning the eponymous bear into a savage predator who lays waste to everything in her way. This bizarre criminal narrative is presented as a dark comedy that is only occasionally as witty as it thinks it is, embracing the film’s trashy B-movie elements and director Elizabeth Banks’ third feature. The bloodier the bear assaults, the better the film – which regrettably is not frequent enough. This sardonic beast is set for release on February 24 in the United Kingdom and the United States, courtesy of Universal Studios, who are banking on the movie’s viral-sensation trailer to bring in the crowds. Cocaine Bear features an all-star ensemble that includes Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson, Jr., and Ray Liotta (in one of his final appearances), but the film’s real MVP is its knowing slapstick and self-aware irreverence. Inevitably, this will be compared to Snakes on a Plane (2006), another self-aware schlocky action-thriller, although Universal will be hoping to outdo that film’s modest $62 million worldwide revenue.
In 1985, a major cargo of cocaine is inadvertently tossed out of an aircraft over the forests of Georgia, causing drug lord Syd (Liotta) to send his son Eddie (Alden Ehrenreich) and his pal Daveed (Jackson, Jr.) to rescue the lost contraband. Meanwhile, in the same woods, a divorced single parent, Sari (Russell) is hunting for her rebellious daughter Dee Dee (Brooklynn Prince) (Brooklynn Prince). But what none of these people realises is that a dangerous bear has found some of the cocaine, swallowed it, and is now so high that she wants to attack anything she sees — especially innocent humans. Based on real events, Banks’s (Pitch Perfect 2, the 2019 Charlie’s Angels adaptation) latest film, Cocaine Bear, is another example of her films’ primary goal of providing sheer escapism. While the bear’s attacks are often violent, the film has a lighthearted tone because Banks is poking fun at both nature-attacks horror-thrillers and the kitschy, low-budget Sharknado-type films that populate inferior cable channels.
Whether impishly scoring traumatic sequences to poppy Depeche Mode songs or encouraging composer Mark Mothersbaugh to craft over-the-top dramatic themes, the director wants us to laugh and be scared simultaneously, the gore mostly used to punctuate what’s funny about the film’s witless secondary characters being killed off. While Eddie and Daveed’s pursuit of the narcotics is very memorable up until they run across the bear, the Underlying plot is unfortunately forgettable. The CGI employed to bring the monster to life is compelling though, and Banks makes effective use of close-ups to underline the bear’s ferocious stare and horrifyingly sharp fangs. Cocaine Bear wisely restrains how often we see its main character, making each appearance of the bear just scary enough, even when her presence ushers in the comedy. (Most of her victims die horribly, but Banks emphasises the funhouse thrills, always telling us not to take the stranger-than-fiction proceedings too seriously.)
The characters are generic in order to poke fun at the genre, but they aren’t even mildly engaging in their formulaic nature. While Isiah Whitlock Jr. brings a deadpan sense of humour to his role as the jaded veteran detective, Ehrenreich makes his best to humanise Eddie’s short fuse. And for Liotta, his growling criminal is too familiar to crackle. Everyone in Cocaine Bear turns out to be made of cardboard, and the only exciting thing that happens is the digital beast returning to the screen. The script by Jimmy Warden has a few humorous moments. A chase scenario featuring an escaping emergency truck and a swiftly approaching bear is ruthlessly efficient, and a couple of the running gags constantly hit their mark. (The finest concerns the mystery around the proper response to a bear encounter: playing dead or provoking it. Warning: while facing a hairy killing machine high on cocaine, it may not matter much. Despite its best intentions, Cocaine Bear is seldom more than a passable imitation of the so-bad-they’re-good guilty pleasures made by artists considerably less skilled than the ones in front of and behind the camera of this film. Banks’ film is rarely as lively as the predator it depicts.
