It’s 1942 now. Cioma Schönhaus (Louis Hofmann), a young Jew residing in Berlin, receives some bad news. His loved ones have all been shipped off to the death camps in the east, and his best buddy, Det (Jonathan Berlin), has just lost his exemption. Cioma has been granted temporary immunity in exchange for his services to a weapons company, but this arrangement is far from secure. He and Cioma and Det are in a dire predicament, and their severe landlord Frau Peters (Nina Gummich) is driving them out. Nevertheless, Cioma’s art skill is put to meticulous, life-saving use when she is offered the chance to falsify identity papers to transport Jews out of the nation. Maggie Peren’s “The Forger,” inspired by a true tale, recounts the hesitant hero’s stealthy rise to prominence. He saves the lives of over 300 individuals without ever speaking to them, and he doesn’t appear to be driven by any higher ideal. This work allows him to earn ration cards, which he uses to pay for the expenses of courting a young woman he believes to be named Gerda (Luna Wedler), but who actually goes by a different name. She’s hiding something, too, like the fact that she has a public fiancé but secretly dates men like Cioma to get by.

The author and director of “The Forger,” Peren, expertly brings each of these troubled individuals into focus. Det, who at first seems to be a mild-mannered tailor, finds a way to survive thanks to the ladies he meets at the market, and his acquaintances eventually manage to pull themselves out of poverty. Frau Peters’ no-nonsense style is immediately apparent, yet she reveals later that she is struggling with all that is happening. Except for Nazi officials, who are exactly what they seem to be on the surface. Yet Cioma’s change is unlike anybody else’s. Cioma seems emboldened by his forgery to adopt aliases, finding that he can better fit in and escape suspicion in everyday life if he acts as though he belongs in Nazi Germany. He uses public transit during the day, disguises himself as a navy commander at night, and will argue with the Germans if he thinks it would help. This risky game of deception adds a new layer of tension to the film. Can he possibly talk his way out of this? When will his anxieties give out and he has to find his own way out?

Fortunately, Louis Hofmann is a charismatic protagonist who can switch gears in the middle of a scene, altering his tone and body language in the space of a single sentence. In the film’s bleakest moments, he carries it with the power of his expressive eyes, giving life to a young man who seems to have seen too much in his short life. From the raucous nightlife of wartime Berlin to the dreary eatery that only accepts ration cards for payment, Peren and her crew tug at the viewer’s senses to create a full immersion in 1940s Berlin. Christian Stangassinger’s photography, with its gradations between warm and cold tones, and Robert Sterna’s quick editing maintain the picture aesthetically as compelling as its gripping plot. Everything else is a product of the collaboration between production designers Philipp Eggert and Eva Stiebler, art directors Marc Ridremont and Stiebler, and costume designer Diana Dietrich.
This includes the electric outlet dangling from the chandelier, the heating pipes heated by a small fire, the ever-shrinking living spaces, and the characters’ increasingly threadbare clothing. Even while they may seem like little particulars, they really enhanced my enjoyment of the film. There are certain inconsistencies in “The Forger,” such as the juxtaposition of “Catch Me if You Can”-style humour with reminders of war’s violence. The shifts in tone are jarring because they emphasise that Cioma, although being a confident young man whose abilities let him escape to tell his story, did so out of a necessity to survive and not for laughter. There’s a persistent tug of war in “The Forger” between the comedy and the seriousness of the situation.
The movie is now showing.
