Both visually stunning and heartfelt in its message of the need to conserve the seas, “Blueback” suffers from a weak storyline. In fact, not even the best Australian performers could bring the human characters to life, with the exception of Eric Bana’s cameo as the colourful fisherman Macka. It’s not the underwater shots that are mushy, but the narrative. Another important topic is brought up by the film but is never fully explored: Which is more rewarding: making a little contribution to a worldwide movement, or focusing on a more immediate, localised, and tangible path to improvement? That’s the issue that arises between Dora (Meryl Streep), a local resident of a tiny coastal village, and Abby (Mia Wasikowska), a marine biologist studying the effects of pollution on coral reefs. She has been swimming in the ocean since she was 18 months old and feels most at ease there because, as we will see, she was dunked in it shortly after her birth. She is curt with the ship’s staff man below decks, yet kind and loving to the fish in her aquarium. What’s up, little fella? Did I miss you?,” she says regretfully, before adding, “It’s not good news, I’m afraid. What can I do to save your failing house? And then her phone rings. Her mom had to go to the emergency room.

She suffered a stroke and lost her ability to communicate. Abby quickly departs to return Dora to her home. This results in a multi-layered storyline that alternates between the present and Abby’s childhood (depicted by Ariel Donoghue) and adolescence (15). (played by Ilsa Fogg). Dora, played by Radha Mitchell in the present, is represented by Elizabeth Alexander in the flashbacks. The tale is given a few more occurrences through flashbacks, but not much more detail. Several of these pieces seem to be aimed at a younger audience, much like Brie Larson’s “Hoot” or the fact-based “Dolphin Tale,” both of which are far more interesting than “Blueback.” The mother/daughter quarrel, however artificial, appears to be aimed towards a mature demographic. The jarring shifts in mood and the chaotic storytelling are off-putting.

Blueback is the name of a huge grouper fish Dora and Abby first discover on Abby’s eighth birthday when Dora takes her on her first dive. Dora takes Abby to a quiet cove and explains that groupers may live for 70 years and not migrate, putting Abby’s fears to rest. They set up housekeeping, for the most part. The two become fast friends in “My Octopus Teacher” fashion when Abby gives him the moniker Blueback. Dora’s attempts to protect the natural habitat and its plant and animal inhabitants are represented by the fish (a realistically moving puppet). Abby paints detailed, eye-catching watercolours of the fascinating marine life she has observed. Dora provides for her and Abby after the death of Abby’s father by harvesting and selling abalone. So that “they’ll still be there for your children’s children to fish,” she is extremely careful and selects just “one in three.” Nonetheless, her principal role is that of a courageous ocean protector.
She doesn’t need permission to check on Macka’s fishing vessel to make sure he’s not going against “all the essential health and safety procedures.” It’s a different story when a local developer breaks into her house without her consent. He intends to purchase the land in order to construct a resort, which would have a devastating impact on the local environment and lead to the extinction of many rare species of plants and animals. He proposed to her by leaving a note on the kitchen table. No need to hurry, she says to him. We’re staying put for the time being. His response is dispassionate: “Your neighbours all seem interested.” Dora has zero apprehension when it comes to facing off against predators of any kind. But, she is unsure of how to make her case to the city council. Then Abby, a 15-year-old, comes in to explain the situation and exhibits her watercolours of the ocean to give the audience a glimpse of the sea’s beauty. She makes the tough decision to abandon her family and friends in order to fight for the survival of Blueback’s cove and the other Blueback communities throughout the ocean. The picture may be attempting to capture the peacefulness of an underwater setting, but its message gets lost in a haze of tonal languor and too many predictable plots beat for it to succeed.
It’s now showing in cinemas.
