Thanks to Barou’s reawakening, the red team was able to defeat the white team. To defeat Rin Itoshi and recover Bachira, the white team needs to pick a Kunigami, Reo, or Chigiri whose play style is a good fit for the others.
Episode 18: A Recap
The way Yoichi’s approach on the field made Barou feel took him back to his younger self, who was showered with adulation from his teammates. Barou, who was already the best player on the pitch, didn’t care much about his colleagues’ backgrounds or motivations.
At some point, Barou understood that the actual reason he enjoyed playing football was not because he got to behave like a king on the pitch or because he liked kicking the ball about, but rather because he could knock anyone off centre stage whenever he scored. At 4-3, the red squad is within striking distance of a victory over Yoichi, Nagi, and Barou. Once play is resumed, Barou takes aim midway between Nagi and Yoichi. Barou missed the goal, and Kunigami pounced on the loose ball.
Kunigami transfers the ball to Reo since Nagi is defending him quickly, but Reo is thrown off by Yoichi’s presence and loses the ball. Barou quickly grabs the ball, but Chigiri is hot on his heels. In the nick of time, just as Barou was ready to take a shot, Yoichi stepped in front of him with an order to pass the ball, and Barou obeyed without thinking. Yoichi scores again for the white squad, and this time its game-tying. Barou’s hopelessness stems from his defeat at Yoichi’s hands. Since Yoichi forced a pass on him, he has known that he is no longer the King of the Field. To avert a disaster, the red team plans to keep the ball from getting to Yoichi. They want to employ Chigiri’s speed on the game-winning last play as well. Nagi and Yoichi, playing for the white team, want to win by preventing Chigiri from scoring. Nagi wants to include the dethroned monarch Barou, but Yoichi thinks it would be pointless.
The red side takes possession of the ball to start the game over, and Reo tries to bully Yoichi as part of their strategy. Reo sees an opportunity to pass to Chigiri, but the ball is intercepted by Nagi on the way. Yoichi takes a chance on intercepting the ball since he knows Nagi can’t outpace Chigiri. Nagi fumbles the ball, and it comes to rest in front of Barou, whose composure is currently quite shaky. Although Barou knows that using his pass around Yoichi and Nagi may set off a chemical reaction, he can’t shake the uneasy sensation that he’ll regret later. Barou regains control after seeing the many outcomes of his past. Suddenly, Barou employs a chop feint and an acute-angle dribble to throw off the red team’s defence, with Yoichi playing the role of a decoy.
Barou wakes up and decides he no longer wants to take a back seat to Yoichi and Nagi. As a result of his efforts, the red team wins the game by a score of 4–5 against the white team. Yoichi tries to give Barou a high five, but Nagi jumps between them to gloat. Nagi and Yoichi want to know where Barou learned to do his chop dribble, and Barou says it’s his own nasty brand of soccer he’s developed. Anri can be heard over the TVs gushing about how amazing it was that Barou woke up during the game. Considering how talented Barou already was, Jinpachi isn’t even remotely impressed. Instead, he likes to emphasise how Barou’s sorrow prepared the path for his own development. Yoichi, Nagi, and Barou decide who from the white team would move on to face Rin Itoshi’s squad before the show closes.
