Several chapters of Black Clover 349 were leaked this week, revealing some interesting plot twists. The forthcoming issue appears to be the beginning of Asta and Sister Lily’s struggle, which will likely continue for several volumes. Spoilers for Chapter 349 of Black Clover centre on their responses to learning that Asta is still alive, and provide a brief summary of what happens to a person who has become a Paladin. Fans were surprised by the series’ explanation here, although it does explain Sister Lily’s actions in the issue and how Asta managed to survive their first meeting. A long-standing mystery about the existence of the original Sister Lily is resolved in Black Clover Chapter 349.
Quick Review
At the beginning of Black Clover chapter 349, spoilers reveal that Heath is having a brief flashback about his fight with Asta when Yosuga interrupts him by announcing that he would be Heath’s opponent. After affirming her intention to murder Asta rather than bring him here, Lily then inquires as to why he is still alive. But Asta believes that can’t be the case since Sister Lily he knows wouldn’t try to murder him if she thought she could influence him. However, the latter insists that this is not the case, claiming that casting her Fist of Love magic on Asta caused him to reflect on his youth. Lily then confirms that she had previously teleported him against his will by saying that she can only perform her enforced spatial travel spell on him if he is immobilised.
She uses a combination spell on Asta while saying that he must die for the good of the world, prompting him to question why he didn’t just die sooner. In the next chapter of Black Clover (349), we see Asta state that he won’t let Lily murder him, which prompts Lily to say (spoiler alert) that she doesn’t want to kill him either. It is then elaborated on how deeply “Lucius is right” is embedded in the Paladins’ psyches and how highly it is valued. Although their spirits have been severely dominated, they are, in essence, still themselves. At the issue’s conclusion, Asta declares that Lucius is wrong, slashes Lily in the process, and expresses her desire for her to revert to her old personality.
When they become Paladins, do they still have their former personalities?
The Paladins are still the same as they were before, as was stated above and as hinted at in the chapter’s spoilers. Sister Lily, although having previously stated that Asta ought to die, reportedly expresses a wish in the future issue to not murder Asta, suggesting that the series reflects this sentiment. The dissonance arises because the former’s genuine emotions run counter to the “Lucius is correct” viewpoint she has been coerced into adopting. The Paladins are still the same people they always were, and this is supported by the fact that the narrator of the series supposedly reveals this to readers in Black Clover chapter 349. Rather than having their original selves completely erased and replaced, they are imprinted with Lucius’ objectives, ambitions, and desires, making them submissive to him.
