In Chapter 1069 of One Piece, we learn the history of Devil Fruits and why they can’t withstand water. Since Eiichiro Oda’s return from his summer break, he has fielded a number of queries. Devil Fruits were expected to be described once Vegapunk was introduced in the Egghead arc. What they’re looking for may be found in One Piece Chapter 1069. The following was obtained by EtenBoby from the WorstGenForums and confirmed by trusted leaker Redon. According to the legend of the Devil Fruit, it all started with “someone’s yearning to be something more” (One Piece, Chapter 1069).
Their origin is in an intense yearning.
EtenBoby has revealed that Everything Exists For a Reason will be the title of One Piece Chapter 1069. Readers will finally get an idea of what makes Devil Fruits tick after waiting for extensive mythology for 25 years. The following is a transcript of a post made by EtenBoby on the WorstGen Forums:
“They originated in people’s deepest longings. Each fruit represents a person’s aspiration to develop into their full potential.” One Piece Chapter 1069 merely hints at the fact that this procedure occurred; no specifics on how it went down are provided. Hopefully, more information will be revealed in the coming days. However, eating a Devil Fruit may provide you with superpowers, so this history makes sense.
The vulnerability of Devil Fruits to water is also discussed in Chapter 1069 of One Piece. They apparently were protected from breaking the laws of nature by some unseen mechanism. Etenboby explained this peculiar phenomenon as follows:
“The ocean, or “Mother Sea,” does not approve of this since it is not natural. That’s why salt water makes the Devil Fruits so vulnerable.”
It’s unclear whether “Mother Sea” is meant to be a mythical character or a metaphor for nature. Maybe after One Piece Chapter 1069, we’ll get more information on this. Someone who has consumed the Devil Fruit will lose their abilities if they are submerged in water, and will eventually drown.
Is there more to the story of Luffy’s Devil Fruit than meets the eye?
As an aside, Luffy’s Devil Fruit is briefly mentioned in One Piece Chapter 1069. The Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika was the forerunner to the present Gomu Gomu no Mi. Redon has validated the following disclosure by jmena on the WorstGen Forums:
Akuma no Mi does not feature the character of “Nika,” the mythical inspiration for Hito Hito no Mi. There needs to be some sort of background for this to be discussed in this chapter, and Oda certainly has one. It is said that Nika, a legendary character, always managed to put a smile on people’s faces. In addition, he gushed over the ideal of absolute independence.
This is consistent with the belief that the seed for Devil Fruits is the aspiration for self-improvement. Since the Mother Sea is repressive, it’s not too dissimilar from the World Government in that regard. It’s safe to say that Luffy, and the Devil Fruit, in particular, will go down as pivotal figures in global history.
