P-Valley, Starz’s critically acclaimed drama series, has been renewed for a third season, the network announced today. It’s no surprise that this is the case, considering how well-received the show’s first two seasons have been among the streaming service’s subscribers. P-Valley is now Starz’s most popular series ever, with an average of 10.3 million viewers per episode across linear, VOD, and streaming platforms.
The next third season will consist of 10 episodes, each of which will be an hour long, much like the just concluded second season, which ended up in August. Based on Katori Hall’s play Pussy Valley, P-Valley follows the larger-than-life characters associated with the Pynk, a fictional strip joint in the imaginary town of Chucalissa, located in the rural Mississippi Delta.
The play has been called “where trap music meets cinema noir and dares to examine what happens when small-town inhabitants dream beyond the bounds of their constricted circumstances” and tells the “story of survival, chosen family, soulmates, politics, love, and death.” When P-Valley launched on Starz in July 2020, it was an immediate success, and the first season was so well received that it received a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The next year, the Pynk faced an international epidemic, but they still managed to have another successful season.
Abortion, homophobia, men’s mental health, and domestic abuse were all featured this season, upping the stakes and causing heated debate on Twitter. “P-Valley” continues to impress fans, according to STARZ’s head of original programming Kathryn Busby, who praised the show for its “extraordinary degree of empathy and craftsmanship” in depicting life in the Mississippi Delta. Critics and viewers alike have fallen in love with the multifaceted characters in this drama that goes beyond the superficial. Our anticipation for Katori’s third season is at an all-time high.
Creator Hall issued a statement about the renewal, saying; “I can’t express how grateful I am to be able to pen the next instalment of ‘P-Valley.’ The show’s multifaceted, dynamic, and delightfully flawed characters are a love letter to underrepresented groups in the American South. It makes me so happy to hear that people all over the world have taken to the show. If not for our unwaveringly committed Pynk Posse, we would not be mounting that pony again. All of you are what keeps us burning. “And I want to give a shout-out to the people who provided the fuel for this show: everyone who worked on it. Everyone involved in making this program, from the writers and producers to the actors and crew to the executives, puts their hearts and souls (and a little glitter) into it. Expect us to return to your screens as soon as possible, but know that the time spent waiting will be well worth it.
Season 2 of P-Valley features a cast that includes Nicco Annan, Elarica Johnson, Brandee Evans, Shannon Thornton, J. Alphonse Nicholson Parker Sawyers, Harriet D. Foy, Dan J. Johnson (“Corbin”), and Morocco Omari. Rapper Megan Thee Stallion made a much-anticipated cameo in the second season as well. With Johnson’s departure as series regular Hailey/Autumn Night at the close of Season 2, new cast members will be introduced in Season 3. Hall, along with Dante Di Loreto, is an executive producer and showrunner for the Lionsgate TV series.
Although Starz has not yet announced the debut date for Season 3, given creator Michael Hall’s comments above, it may be some time before the program returns. However, the first two seasons are now accessible on the service.
