We were all expecting this moment, but Netflix kept us waiting for what felt like an eternity until they released the teaser for Season 2 of The Crown. Season 5’s premiere has been met with unprecedented excitement because of several factors, including the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the series’s recasting, and the new season’s focus on Princess Diana’s final years. Starting in early November, a brand new season will be available to watch. The Crown’s promotional materials waste little time getting to the heart of the matter: the royal family is in trouble. The world has changed tremendously since the divorce crisis involving Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Prince Charles (Dominic West), and the function of the monarchy in the modern day has come into question as a result of developments in television.
Now that we get to see the new cast members in action, we can see that Imelda Staunton is a serious candidate for this year’s Emmys if the little sequences we see of her are any indication. From scenes depicting the constant harassment from paparazzi & news outlets to Diana herself lamenting that she “never stood a chance,” it’s clear that this season will be a touching tribute to Diana and how difficult her final months were. At the same time, it seems like the season will make a point of showing how Diana fought tooth and nail to have some control over her own narrative, including a game-changing interview with the BBC. Even while the Royal Family saga is far from over, the teaser for The Crown serves as a sombre reminder that the show’s finale is drawing nigh.
Since Netflix has already renewed the programme for a sixth and final season in 2020, it would make sense to finish the series with Queen Elizabeth II’s death in light of recent events and the fact that she is the series’ indisputable protagonist. This season of The Crown also stars Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Claudia Harrison as Princess Anne, Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles, Jonny Lee Miller as John Major, Salim Daw as Mohamed Al Fayed, and Khalid Abdalla as Dodi Fayed.
On November 9, Netflix will unveil the fifth season of The Crown.
Synopsis
Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) muses on her reign, which has seen nine prime ministers, the rise of mass television, and the decline of the British Empire as she nears the 40th anniversary of her accession. Unfortunately, further difficulties lie ahead. There have been both challenges and possibilities brought about by the seismic upheaval in the world order signalled by the fall of the Soviet Union & the transfer of sovereignty in Hong Kong. At the same time, problems are building closer to home. Prince Charles (Dominic West) urges his mother to allow him to divorce Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), posing a constitutional crisis for the monarchy.
As Charles and Diana’s separation becomes more apparent to the public, rumours begin to circulate about the state of their marriage. In response to the growing media attention, Diana decides to write a book about their life together, which she then publicly launches, breaking with family tradition and revealing the schisms in the House of Windsor. When Mohamed Al Fayed (Salim Daw) arrives, the already tense situation is certain to escalate. Driven by his ambition for acceptance of the highest degree, he uses his self-made money and influence to try to win himself and his son Dodi (Khalid Abdalla) a place at the royal table.
