Chief of War, Jason Momoa’s next major project with Apple TV+, has taken another step forward with the recent announcement of Temuera Morrison’s casting in the limited series. In the production that will depict the tale of the colonisation of Hawaii from the perspective of the indigenous inhabitants, Morrison will play King Kahekili, King of Maui. In addition to starring in and creating the limited series, Momoa also wrote and served as executive producer for it. This project is still in the planning phases, but we do know that it will be an “epic and unparalleled narrative of the unification and colonisation of Hawaii from an indigenous point of view,” with Morrison playing a pivotal part in what sounds like a war epic.
Following receiving an 8-episode straight-to-series order from AppleTV in April, Morrison is the second actor to join the project after Jason Momoa. Morrison and Momoa, whose professional connection began with Aquaman in the DC Universe, will rejoin for the film (2018). Morrison made his second cameo in a DC Comics film, following Green Lantern in 2011, as Arthur Curry’s father, Thomas Curry, opposite Jason Momoa as the title character. Morrison’s tenure in the DCEU has been extended as well, with the actor slated to reprise his role in both The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, both of which are due for release in 2019. Morrison is well-known not only for his contributions to DC but also to another mega-franchise, Star Wars. Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones was where he made his franchise debut as Jango Fett in 2002.
Morrison has also played Mandalorian bounty hunter clones. After making his debut as Boba Fett in Disney+’s The Mandalorian, the first live-action series set in the Star Wars universe, he is currently repeating the character in the continuing spin-off, titled The Book of Boba Fett. Morrison’s filmography includes the classics Once Were Warriors and What Becomes of the Broken Hearted. including the animated film Moana. The show’s executive producers are Francis Lawrence, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Erik Holmberg, with Thomas Pa’a Sibbett serving as co-showrunner and co-writer. The show’s creator, Doug Jung, will also act as the show’s executive producer. Recently, it was revealed that Justin Chon will be directing the pilot and the first episode. Morrison will likewise reprise his role as the protagonist in the forthcoming New Zealand drama series the Far North for Sundance Now. In addition, he appears in an episode of the third season of My Life is Murder.
