Many popular streaming shows are bringing back previous seasons for the fall season. On the comics side of things, the fourth season of DC’s Titans will premiere on HBO Max on November 3. Since its panel at last month’s New York Comic Con, fans have been anticipating the show’s return with great anticipation. With only a few weeks left until the season 4 premiere, viewers now got their first look at the darker menace that will be explored in the upcoming season: the Church of Blood. This brand-new, action-packed trailer fills in a lot of interesting background for the season’s story. This season primarily focuses on the Church of Blood and Brother Blood but also introduces renowned DC villains Jinx and Lex Luthor.
Until recently, it was unclear how each of these three dangers was connected. The preview reveals that Lex (Titus Welliver) is fascinated by the Church of Blood and the occult. In order to combat their magical adversary, Nightwing and the Titans are forced to grudgingly join forces with Jinx (Lisa Ambalavanar). Similarly, in the clip, Mother Mayhem (Franka Potente) seems to corrupt Sebastian Blood, also known as Brother Blood (Joseph Morgan).
The Titans have seen formidable opponents before, like Deathstroke and Red Hood, but it appears that this season may be their most difficult.
Given the grim comedic origins of Church of Blood, the current season has wasted no time in delivering gory horror scenes. The teaser shows Blood’s sway expanding over time. The visions that Raven had in the teaser hint at a darker, more supernatural plot. It also suggests that the arrival of Blood’s cult in Metropolis would force the Titans to confront their personal demons. In particular, the new clip features a shadowy swordsman who looks strikingly like Deathstroke.
In the second season’s finale, the Titans’ most infamous adversary was killed. While the promotion for this season has made it seem that Brother Blood and his cult are the primary antagonists, this teaser suggests that Blood is only a sad pawn in Lex’s larger ambition to become a deity. In the books, Raven’s villainous father Trigon was venerated by the Church of Blood. Whether or not Trigon, who featured in Season 1, will return for Season 2 remains to be seen. In any event, the cult horror storyline is well and intriguingly established in the trailer. It will be interesting to see how Welliver interprets Lex and how his half-clone, Superboy, figures into Lex’s wicked scheme.
Metropolis will be the scene of the upcoming war between the Titans and the Church of Blood. In Season 4, you’ll see a lot of Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Ryan Potter, Joshua Orpin, Potente, and Morgan. In addition to Jay Lycurgo and Ambalavanar, there will be a number of guest stars. The launch of the first two episodes of Season 4 will air on HBO Max on Thursday, November 3. After that, each week until December 1 will include a standalone episode. There are still six more episodes left in the season, all of which will premiere in 2023.
