It would be something of an understatement to say that the making of the next The Flash movie has been everything but smooth. The film’s principal actor, Ezra Miller, has been the subject of controversy, screenplay rewrites, and many director changes. The Hollywood Reporter, however, claims that a sequel’s script has already been completed, suggesting that Warner Bros. and DC remain optimistic about the project. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick allegedly wrote the script for The Flash 2. Aquaman and its sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, were written by Johnson-McGoldrick, who is no stranger to the superhero genre.
His previous work speaks for itself, so it’s no wonder that the powers that be asked him to pen The Flash. At the worldwide box office, Aquaman has earned more than any other DCEU picture and is the only one to break the $1 billion mark. Orphan, The Conjuring 2, and many episodes of The Walking Dead are among the works by Johnson-McGoldrick.
Since The Flash is still a few months away, it makes sense that details about the narrative are being kept under wraps. Truth be told, there are still many unanswered questions about The Flash’s narrative. For DC Fandom, the only official source of information is a brief teaser trailer that was published a year ago.
There are some striking similarities to the plot of “Flashpoint,” in which the hero attempts to change the past and save his mother from being murdered. Many fans had lost hope for a sequel before hearing that the screenplay had already been written. The main reason is their doubt that they would ever see The Flash. Since its announcement in 2014, the production of the film has been fraught with difficulty. As was previously established, it has been repeatedly postponed for various reasons, and several filmmakers and writers, including Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Rick Famuyiwa, have joined the project throughout the years.
Filming finally got underway with Andy Muschietti in charge of the camera and Christina Hodson (working on a plot by John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein, and Joby Harold) penning the screenplay. However, Miller’s very public legal difficulties have been and continue to be the largest problem for The Flash. The actor has a lengthy criminal record that includes many arrests on accusations ranging from theft to narcotics distribution to minors. Many have questioned whether or not the film will be released at all in light of the Miller issue. Even though Warner Bros. has already spent over $200 million on the movie, they are clearly hoping to recoup some of their investment at the box office.
A June 23rd, 2023 release date for The Flash has been set.
