Today, the world is experiencing a “Brenaissance,” and everyone is thrilled to have Brendan Fraser back. The actor’s performance in his most recent film, The Whale, has earned him accolades and prizes, and the film is being hailed as his return despite a generally negative reception. Audiences and fans, however, never lost their excitement for Fraser, especially because of his participation in Universal’s action-adventure franchise The Mummy. Is Fraser maybe taking on a different interpretation of this classic part? The actor has been quoted as saying in Variety that he would be interested. In The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001), and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2003), Fraser played soldier-turned-adventurer Rick O’Connell, who was a major romantic interest for many women (2008).
Despite the popularity of the first two films, which experienced renewed interest from fans on the occasion of their 20th anniversaries, the third picture was universally panned and had the lowest box office take. Fraser added, “But I’d be open to it if someone came up with the proper premise,” despite the fact that he had no idea how a fourth picture would be made. Soft or hard, a reboot has been done to the franchise several times since the first film was released in 1999, which means that a hypothetical fourth picture would not be the first in the series.
Rachel Weisz, who co-starred with Brendan Fraser for two films as the intrepid librarian Evelyn Carnahan-O’Connell, left the franchise before the premiere of Tomb of the Dragon Emperor due to family obligations and dissatisfaction with the storyline. Issues were not groundless, as seen by the film’s general reception. Maria Bello, who replaced Weisz, gave the character a completely different spin, making her more of a conventional Strong Female Lead than Weisz’s well-intentioned, awkward-yet-tough version. In 2017, a new film was released with the same name as the franchise, The Mummy, and featured Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe.
The movie was supposed to be the first of a series based on Universal’s canon of classic monsters known as the “Dark Universe.” Unfortunately, the reboot’s dismal performance at the movie office meant that any attempt to create an interwoven storyline universe à la the Marvel Cinematic Universe had to be abandoned. Perhaps the lacklustre reaction to the 2017 picture might be attributed to its horror focus, as opposed to the pulpy adventure manner that Fraser’s films typically utilised.
According to Fraser’s remarks to Variety: “Producing a film like that is challenging. Our Mummy had something going for it that I didn’t notice in the movie: a sense of humour. That’s what the previous incarnation was missing. The film was too straightforward to be effective as a horror flick. The Mummy is supposed to be thrilling, not scary.” And what a trip they were, with just the perfect amount of terror and gore, action, humour, beautiful scenery, just enough ancient history to keep history buffs and newcomers interested, and of course, the sweeping, witty romance between Rick and Evelyn.
Should a fourth film in the series be made, these components, along with the original cast members including Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Oded Fehr, would be brought back. It’s hard to fathom what may have offended Arnold Vosloo’s Imhotep this time, but without his unique blend of intense passion and resolve to accomplish what he thinks is right regardless of the consequences, it’s impossible to picture the franchise coming back. After a lengthy absence from the spotlight following his sexual assault by then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Philip Berk, the actor may find a suitable reentry to Hollywood in a role and series that made him even more popular than he already was.
In an interview, Fraser claimed he wasn’t sure if speaking out about the attack would get him banned, but many of us have seen firsthand what happens to artists who strive to hold the powerful accountable. Fraser continued by saying “I understand how difficult it is to achieve success. I made three attempts at it before giving up.” Even individuals who cannot take horror films, like me, have come to appreciate these movies very much, thus it might be claimed that he did not attempt so much as he succeeded.
Netflix subscribers may watch all three of Fraser’s Mummy movies.
