There are a lot of highly anticipated movies opening this October. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Black Adam is one of the most prominent. The legendary DC Comics villain is making his debut, but he has company. The Justice Society of America (JSA) is also making the trip because they are eager to make their debut on the big screen. In anticipation of the upcoming release of Black Adam, the film’s composer Lorne Balfe has released the JSA theme to ComicBook.com for fans to enjoy. The JSA’s emotive epic score provides a perfect musical backdrop for such a legendary superhero team. The Justice Society of America (JSA) was one of the earliest superhero teams to appear in comic books, although few readers are aware of this fact.
Their introduction in 1940 puts them more than two decades ahead of both the Justice League and The Avengers. The Black Adam team’s concept captures the spirit of classic comics and the golden period. It’s the sort of stuff you’d hear in an Indiana Jones movie. It has the same enticing sense of adventure that made the 1930s and 1940s serials so popular. Given that the JSA also battled crime during this time, this is appropriate. At a time when the concept of “the American Way” had a quite different connotation.
We’ve seen the JSA on series like Justice League Unlimited, Smallville, and Stargirl before, but it’ll be interesting to see how Black Adam updates this classic superhero team for the present day. Comic books are full of history, and characters like Black Adam, Hawkman, and Doctor Fate are no exception. That’s why it’s terrific that these timeless heroes are now receiving the theme songs they merit. Black Adam’s theme was only published at the end of last month, and if the film is even half as grandiose as this anti-song, hero’s comic book fans are in for a wonderful treat.
Balfe is one of the most underappreciated composers of the previous decade, despite the fact that DC has always used fantastic score music for their films. His soundtracks for video games like Assassin’s Creed III are among the greatest of their genre, while his work on movies like Mission: Impossible—Fallout, Top Gun: Maverick and The Lego Batman Movie is as impressive. While we wait for the October 21 release of the Justice Society of America movie.
