The stories of Sherlock Holmes have been adapted into several successful media over the years. However, Enola Holmes on Netflix is one of the most undervalued adaptations of this beloved literary series in recent years. Based on Nancy Springer’s young adult novel series of the same name, the film starring Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) as Sherlock’s younger sister Enola is getting a sequel this November. But if you really can’t stand to wait that long, you’re in luck. On October 11, a new graphic novel named Enola Holmes: Mycroft’s Dangerous Game will be released.
Brown has provided us with a brand new teaser for the comic. There is a gap between the two movies, and this new plot fills it in, all while taking place in the Netflix universe. Here is a brief summary of the graphic novel: Enola’s narrative is relatable for fans and new readers alike as she goes on a journey with her famous brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft (portrayed on page and screen by fan-favourite actors Henry Cavill and Sam Claflin). Join Sherlock Holmes’ defiant adolescent sister Enola on an exciting journey and find out the truth behind the new mystery she’s up against in this sequel to the wildly successful film Sherlock Holmes.
Mycroft’s kidnapping by an unknown anarchist organisation prompts Enola to look into the matter in the hopes of finding him and getting back something of great value he stole from her. She investigates the circumstances behind her brother’s kidnapping with the aid of Lord Tewkesbury and a homeless lad named Shag, and the trail of clues leads her deep into London’s subway system, where she encounters anarchists and attempts to stop their scheme. Just from reading that, I can tell that this is going to be another one of Holmes’ classic capers, full of unexpected turns and twists.
The trailer explains the plot and gives readers a taste of the graphic novel’s aesthetic by splicing in clips of Brown as Enola from the first film. It’s in keeping with the series title in that it uses a whimsical yet darkly gothic watercolour aesthetic. Mycroft is shown in the midst of his abduction, while Enola and Lord Tewkesbury have a tender moment, and there are also some cryptic clues and exciting scenes depicted. The adventures of Sherlock Holmes have been retold countless times over the past century, but Enola Holmes gave the franchise a much-needed injection of modernity.
Netflix’s take on Enola’s narrative was hilarious, with some unexpectedly good action sequences. Brown’s performance was a joy, and her fourth-wall breaching delivery was delicious. Along with Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, and Helena Bonham Carter, Brown had fantastic chemistry with them. And Cavill, in particular, was a delight to watch as Holmes. This makes it all the more intriguing to watch how the connection between Enola and Sherlock develops in the next instalment. The first trailer for Enola Holmes 2 premiered only last month.
The previews for the sequel have been really promising, and it looks like we can expect more of the same hilarious fun. The release date for Enola Holmes: Mycroft’s Dangerous Game is October 11 at all good bookstores. In preparation for Enola Holmes 2’s debut on Netflix on November 4, the graphic novel is now available for pre-order on Amazon.
